Hi guys, I am finishing summer work in a few weeks and returning to college so I will be hoping to get my p45 and submit a p50 form as I will be unemployed.
Just wondering, does me applying for tax back affect my employer at all. Would there be any reason for them to be bitter or am I entitled to the tax back?
Also, if I apply with p50 form. Can I work over Halloween etc ?
    Thanks

Applying for tax back via a p50 and p45 doesn't impact your former employer as the refund if any is due will come from Revenue. Your former employer will have paid over any taxes withheld from you to Revenue in their monthly P30 submissions.

You will be able to work at any time. Using your p45 along with the p50 means you shouldn't use the p45 for your next employment. If you work again this year after your claim, just register your employment online via your Revenue account.

    Cool thanks for your reply.
Just on the topic of returning to work, can I submit a p50 with a p45 and then return to the payroll as soon as the refund is rewarded? Or do I do like you said and register via my revenue account?
As I know I will be working some Fridays and Saturdays. I just wanna try get the refund as it's a nice lump

Just on this also, is it okay to get a p45, for p50 purposes, from my employer. Then return to work with this employer, part time before the end of the year?
    Thanks

If you get a p45 and are unemployed, you can request p50 unemployment review within the 4 or 8 week timeframe. Taking up employment again with the same employer later in the year is fine. As you won't be able to use your p45 for the second employment after your p50 review, you will be taxed correctly by your employer once the job is registered with Revenue. The job must be registered so an updated tax credit cert can issue to your employer.

    Hi,
Just on this topic. I never sent requested a P45 off my employer in the end and continued to work part time despite being in college.

I have been working less and less lately due to college taking over and not having time to work.
I last worked on the 23rd of November and wont be working for my employer before the new year. So I have almost not worked for 4 weeks now.

My question is, if I request my P45 now and submit it with a P50 form. Does the P50 have to be submitted before the end of 2018?
Can I claim money back from being unemployed/student from this year in 2019, if I cant mange to get a P45 or get the P50 submitted before the New Year?

Since you weren't technically unemployed during the year and your employment didn't cease; your employer should have taxed you correctly so long as you were on a cumulative cert. That means any tax you may have overpaid earlier in the year should have been refunded through your wages by your employer as your hours got less and less.

It's too late in the year to to submit a p50 and p45. Wait untill you have your P60 from your employer for 2018 and request a p21 balancing statement for 2018 via your online Revenue account. That will show you if you overpaid any tax in 2018 and refund it to you. You have 4 years from the end of the present tax year to request the review.

Ok thanks very much for the reply.
From what I can gather, I should have submitted the P45 and P50 before the end of October, if I wanted to go down that route?

When can I expect to receive a P60 from my employer? And will I have to request it?
I have received tax back for all years previous. Thanks again for the help, I just cannot get my head around how tax works at all

Normally if you are in one job for the year, not moving about and taxed in the normal cumulative basis, your employer ensures you pay the correct amount of tax. Moving jobs through the year or being on a week one or emergency basis of tax can lead to refunds.

For you now, your employer has until mid February to give you your P60. You can also have a look at your last payslip and see your totals for the year in terms of pay and tax and post the figures here if you like. Your tax is PAYE and USC.

Ah OK thanks, I have attached a snip of my last pay slip from the end of November roughly. I usually get paid 120 per day but this day I got 160 and never queried it

The payslip shows you are in a week 1 basis which is usually applied when Revenue were missing some piece of information or to stop a large underpayment being taken at once. If you were on a cumulative basis and you has no other sources of taxable income in the year you shouldn't be paying any PAYE at all based on those figures. Did you have any other employments in the year or any DSP payments this year?

That's a nett pay arrangement which no employer or employee should ever enter into as they can go horribly wrong. Employers will no longer be able to do them anyway from January due to the changes to the PAYE system from 2019 onwards.

Anyway, to sort your refund, you'll need your P60 and can just request a p21 online in January or February when you get your P60.
