Are Dublin Employers Bicycle Friendly?

    Hi All,

I am hoping to move to Dublin and I am considering cycling to work.

I am aware of Bike to Work schemes but can anyone tell me if employers in Dublin are typically bicycle friendly.

To rephrase my question, is there anything they typically don’t do that could make cycling to work easier?

    Thanks

Bit of an odd one, as I'm not sure what you mean by "bicycle friendly". If you're wondering about lockups, showers, BTW schemes it would be advisable to ask or do some research first. ( https://www.biketowork.ie/ )

If it's about safety, there are plenty of cycle lanes and Dublin is (mostly) bike friendly (I don't want to start an argument on this!).

It wouldn't be to the employers benefit if they didn't facilitate their employees getting to work.

Any large office block will provide some level of bicycle parking, the more modern typically the better facilitated. Smaller companies will depend on what kind of space they have. Basically its a very hard question to answer but cycling is an accepted mode of transport to work!

Will you be working in an office building? Older office buildings can sometimes have pretty poor shower facilities with bad ventilation, some older blocks don't have showers at all. Best check with your employer. Typically the employer will have good bike parking, even in older blocks.

It does depend. In general you don't have difficulty finding somewhere to lock a bike, but the level of security can vary. I've encountered places that have little more than a storeroom to throw bikes in, and other places that have segregated card-secured cages with proper racks inside. Outside of employer parking, there's usually a pole or a fence near any office to lock a bike.

Changing facilities are probably the biggest unknown, and the one thing that most companies could improve. Smaller companies in particular can be lacking anything at all, or there may be a shower room-cum-storage room that you can use. Brand new buildings may have gym-quality locker rooms with multiple showers, but the general rule is that if a company does have changing facilities it won't have nearly enough of them and you'll be waiting/queuing if you arrive in at 8:30.

This is a question you can ask at the interview stage; I do. You'd be surprised at the amount of people who are completely unaware whether there are facilities in the office and have to go and ask.
