Whining noise

I've a bit of a weird one which I've tried to deduce myself but before bringing it to a mechanic wanted to see if anyone else has had this.
When I start the car in the morning or in general if it's been left a bit then it makes a whining noise if I tap the accelerator.
It then goes away after a few minutes but then comes back if I accelerate hard.
Sounds like a supercharger in a way but it's pretty damn loud.
Water pump and belt/tensioners were changed last October.
Hard to pin point the exact location of the noise but it's definitely rev related.
    Any ideas?

    fuel pump?

    159 2.4 diesel.
Sounds like it might be a bearing but near on impossible to detect where it's coming from and it only does it first thing in the morning for a small bit and then again if I floor it above a certain rev.

Sounds like a loose fan belt or a worn alternator bearing.

Are you sure it’s not your wife whining that you’re going too fast?

Auxiliary belt. Turn off the air/con and see does it change.

    slipping belt for me too

Sounds like alternator bearing to me too if belts and tensioner are fresh.

My old 156 used to make a sucking whine type noise that sounded like it was coming from some part of the air intake or the air filter when you made a vacuum pressing on the throttle. Can you get someone else to rev it while you listen? Best way to narrow it down.

AC on or off makes no difference to the whining noise but if the AC is on there is an additional whining noise but it's not as audible as the other one.
Leads me to think that either the alternator bearing is on the way out but then I'd have thought that the whine would be constant?
Or my fan belt has started to let go but then again, I'd still wonder why it's not on constantly..

    Just remembered to add something.
In the mornings I can replicate the noise by simply revving the engine with the clutch out.
Once warm though I can't get the noise to come back but only if I'm driving, this would point to a drive train issue right?

May be the turbo charger, hard to say without hearing

Not the turbo, it's coming from the front side of the engine so probably belt or tensioner related.
I'll try and take a video of it tomorrow.

Here is a short recording of how it sounds first thing in the morning

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67rLu3MqKBw

This noise goes away after a minute or so. Then once it's floored it come back towards the higher end of the rev range.
    Any ideas?

I tried but as you can hear from the video I posted above it doesn't give me the impression of being a sucking type noise.
Also I'd have thought this would be a constant whine.

My yaris was sounding similar when alternator pulley was gone. Play was visible and noise only occurs when I revved it. Mechanic changed water pump while he is there but I don't remember if it was relevant.

It starts to become more frequent so I'm also suspecting that this a pulley of some sort.
I'll bring it to the mechanic later on and see what they think.

Booked in for Monday, he seems to think it's either the alternator pulley or air con pully.
    I'll know on Monday.

I was going to ask which side of the front the sound came from, but it does sound like a pulley doing something weird.

Another thing I was thinking was an air leak somewhere in the turbocharger system, but it'd be clear from the cockpit (the turbo pressure gauge would do weird things) and more importantly, the mechanic would have figured out immediately.

Yeah I first feared it was the turbo but it boosts just fine and the gauge shows it boost to just under 1.6 bar which is the normal amount for it.
Next I thought a bearing in the box but I'm ruling this out as well.
So I'm inclined to believe it's either the belt for the alternator which is shared with the AC pump (hence why I turn it on the whining sound changes) so if I'm lucky I could get away with simply changing the belt or one of the pulleys.

You can drop some drops of oil on back of pulleys, I do that. He takes away any bearing noise, few drops of engine oil.
You noise sounds like a turbo whine, if it has a turbo that is .

    It has a turbo.
I don't believe it to be, i hope it isn't ;) but I really suspect this to be a pulley or belt issue.

So the mechanic has driven it and says he now things it's the turbo :(
Which has me practically screwed as I'm supposed to be driving to Italy in a few days...
I'll know later if it's for sure.

Could you not try run it with aux belt off?... at least if noise goes away you’ll have ruled out turbo. With belt off u can check alternator pulley, it has a one way bearing built into it, check it hasn’t seized.
    Marty.

Some good news, turbo is good. What's happened is a bolt for the exhaust manifold has simply disappeared.
So the air is being pressed out of this hole which is causing the whine.
Car is sage to drive but the bad news is to do the job for a 10e job the turbo, hoses and manifold have to be removed...
So booked in for September 3rd.

I wouldn't drive the car, what will happen is the exhaust will wear a groove in the aluminium head and it will never seal again. We usually have to weld them and re machine after it happens

If the gasket is damaged and needs replacement then won't the groove be there already?

Yes potentially but now that you know it's leaking then it is making the groove/ making it bigger every time you drive. Could turn a simple enough repair into a head off job
