    Hi all,
Just have a query out of pure curiosity. Was flying home from Italy to dublin with Aer Lingus. They had overbooked flight and offered me a flight the next day instead just before i boarded the plane. They said that they would fund hotel obviously. I declined, but I am curious! Does this happen often? Am I right in assuming it would just be an airport hotel? Are people entitled to any other compensation if they accept the offer?

From what I’ve heard overbooking situations can work out quite well if you don’t have commitments and you can get a hotel, money or maybe a voucher worth hundreds etc which is very nice indeed if it suits you.

It happens fairly regularly. Airlines over book because there are almost always people who miss connections or just don't turn up. When it happens they will provide accommodation and a few hundred euro compensation for each member of your party, so it can be lucrative if you aren't under pressure to get home.

Anyone know if the airline cover additional car parking charges incurred?

I don’t know, but the sometimes offer you money, maybe €250-€500 depending on the route or delay you’ll have etc, i I guess this compensation is designed to cover all those things

They make you an offer of hotel and cash/voucher to take a different plane, you counter offer of hotel, cash/voucher and parking. See if you can reach an agreement.

It has happened to me a few times.

I have always managed to get at least €250 in cash, plus meals and hotel. Very handy if you don't need to be home urgently.
I always try to be cute. Never rush to give away your seat. I leave them a few mins and if no-one volunteers I shall offer my seat.

I was on an internal transit in Frankfurt a few weeks ago and the airline at the gate beside me was asking over the PA for volunteers to switch to a later flight (approx 2:00pm instead of 10:00am), they were announcing that they would pay €300 for anyone who would take the switch.
They asked a few times but nobody seemed interested, I don't know what happened in the end as my flight boarded but I'd have definitely taken it if it was my flight...

If no one volunteers, then they pick people who are then involuntarily denied boarding.

Are those forced to be offloaded also compensated? Presumably so.

Yes, but only at the minimum EU 261 levels. The secret is holding out long enough to get the max offer before they start bumping people.

usually these are the last people to arrive to check in rather than random

I haven't seen this happening much with European airlines but its quite common in the US.
Happened me once with US Airways flying to Dublin, was offered $350, a hotel and a business class seat on the following days flight.

Happened to me with Continental too - cash, hotel and business class via Manchester.
