Daughter deferring college return and susi application

    Hi

    My daughter has finished first year of a level 8 degree. We were marginally over the income threshold for susi last year. She has been working throughout the summer and moved to rental accommodation close to work and college. She’s been offered a position from Sept in the same company and is now considering deferring returning to college in sept.

    If she does this, will she herself make an application for susi as an independent adult when she returns to college in the year 2019/20? Thereby qualifying for a grant.

    Hello, have a look at this page:

    https://susi.ie/eligibility/applicant-class/

    This is the part which might answer your question:

    "Reclassification

    Your applicant class may be reclassified from dependent to independent under the following circumstances;

    On movement from Further Education (PLC course) to Higher Education (undergraduate course)
    On re-entry after a three year break in studies. (meaning you have not attended a course leading to a major award at levels 1-10 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)for 3 full years)

    However, in both of the above circumstances you must still meet the criteria to be over 23 years of age on the 1st of January of the year of your first point of entry/re-entry to an approved course of further or higher education in order to be classed as an independent student."

    Best regards.
