Data Recovery - Mac

Last week I was doing some aerial shots and video. Brought the bird back down and removed the MicroSD Card (32GB Lexar) only to find it would not be recognised. Tried a Disk Repair in Disk Utilities and that failed. As I was on a houseboat I put the card aside and put in a spare one. Went back up and sort of repeated the flight.

Back home I have ordered a replacement and it's in the post but I thought I would have a bit more of a fiddle with the faulty one. I recall hearing about Recuva but it seems that's only a Windoze program. Did some searching and there are quite a few alternatives out there. Have downloaded a few now and some just do not work but others do. They show the partitions on the card, the directories and files in them. I can even see the file sizes of the DNG Photo's and the MOV video files.

The next step is to recover these files but to do so seems to require an upgrade to the paid version, even when in the reviews there was meant to be a limited amount of recovery and function in the free version. Anyway it would be nice to get the files back so may as well drop them a few bucks now it has gone this far. I was thinking they may want US$10 or US$20. Not at all the cheapest has been US$90 and up to close to US$200. They are relying on you being desperate to get the files back. I am not as redid the shoot. Still it would be nice to have them now I know they are still there.

Anyone know of a recovery solution which is free or affordable that will work?

Trying "Amazing" now. It's slow but it says it will allow 20 files for free.

This is the panorama I repeated and have now stitched and processed.

Mac binary is available for this. Bit more spartan than recuva but just as effective if not more so. A tool used by many pros.

I had a look at that but the notes say it will only work on an image on Mac and not a physical drive.

I'm rarely on OSX but it should work.
    Mac OS X (Intel)
New Mac including MacBook and Mac Pro have an Intel CPU and HardDisk is partitioned by default using EFI partition table. TestDisk & PhotoRec handle EFI since version 6.9, so you can use them to recover your data.

If you see the comments RE PowerPC macs those are ancient and hopefully don't apply to you (they were discontinued in 2005).

Didn't your Lexar card come with a voucher for their Image rescue software? It runs on Mac. Or if you have SanDisk card, they come with a voucher for their software as well and this always worked very well for me.

    Hi,
DDRescue (https://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/) is a great tool for file/data recovery from all sorts of disks and is 100% free. I have only ever used it under Linux, however, it is quite straightforward to boot a pc/laptop into Linux (without a permanent change of OS) and use the program.
