    hi
iv a week off next week, and herself looking for the outside of house painted. house is 12 years old so its probably time !

the house is 2700sq f, normal plaster,, so im thinking of using a spray gun , either hire or buy.

a few queries if anyone can help :

    - is spraying as good as rolling?

    - how many coats should i give?

    - what paint do i use for undercoat?

    - how much paint will i be expecting to use?

    thanks in advance.

    Thanks for that.

but i live in private house, away from everyone. so i can move away every thing and maybe cover the windows.

its only the big massive gable end that i cant stomach painting with the roller. if i got that done the rest of the house would be okay to do with roller

does spraying use much more paint than rolling?

no. With a skilled operator. And if you are clear all round on a still day grand!

My neighbor got his house sprayed.
I got home and to say I went ballistic was an understatement.

As a painter myself, be very very careful with spraying. Covering windows and doors is a MUST, cover your fascia and soffit, cover your roof, cover EVERYTHING you don’t want painted.
Park your car as far away as possible. Overspray will travel FAR. Use dulux and thin it down by 10% for both coats, add floetrol solution for 1st coat. Weather shield 10 litres bucket covers approximately 160 square meters so that’s a fairly good guide to how much paint you need

If you haven’t sprayed before it can be tricky. You will probably use up more paint spraying than rolling. The only real reason to spray is that if the outside of your house is a dash finish?

Also the clean up after using a spray system is a pain.

Look at it this way. It might take you a half day to cover everything up, you will be up ladders etc. That half a day could got towards cutting the whole house in and ready for rolling.

Have you got a platform to work off when spraying or just using a ladder?

I suppose weight up the costs of getting a spray vs a good pole, roller and a good brush.

12 years since last painted. Does any of the surface need to be scraped, washed down etc.

i wouldnt spray a smooth wall like that. if you put on too much paint you will get runs everywhere. thats grand on dash, it will blend in. it would be faster and cheaper to roll it

Up to 40%. You also may need an extra coat as you need to water down the paint first. Only turn up the pressure enough so you don't have any tails when spraying. ( Tails form on outer edge of spray if pressure is too low). Keeping the pressure at the right level will help minimise over spray. Also, I find that a roller will spray far worse than a sprayer.

Thanks but i think ill stick to the roller. sounds too complex.

    ill be like popeye.

any idea how much it would cost to paint a 2700sqft , storey and a half house for the first time??

Allow for 80 litres of main colour. 1st coat should be watered down, then 2 more coats on top

    Thanks for that.

so, are you saying 3 coats in total?

and is there a special paint used for the undercoat, or do u just use watered down main colour? is that 80 litres in total for all 3 coats ?

If you get an extension pole for your roller, the job will be a lot quicker. You can get 3 section poles too.

In fact i use a pole on the roller for all the painting I do, even the low down jobs.

    Try toolstation or screwfix.
