      Car is too old

Yeah got a few of them

At this stage I'm not literally scrapping a good car to buy someone else's problems

Makes a mockery of the NCT, that should be some assurance the car is insurable

The car is insurable, and based on the OP you have got several quotes already.
The issue is the price point at which you deem acceptable.

Try insure teenagers/students as named drivers with a learners permit (my own fault :D)

      Well I remember paying 3.8k on a 2K car

Was it as bad as that?

Starting out with a full NCB and 2 adults (other half own car) just shy of €2800 for 2 on learner permits.
Should have staggered them maybe but you live and learn.
Down to €1700 as one passed the test and 2 years later.
Now have to get other to do the test.

U18 and learner permit paint a massive red flag to insurers.
Managed initially to get 4 quotes.
2 sub 3K, 1 3.5K and one because we must quote but PFO.
Important item in the decision was to protect the NCB.

I find it darkly funny some of the comments in the learning to drive threads.
Inexperienced drivers make mistakes as they learn.
Those mistakes sometimes result in accidents ( handbrake was my new best friend) which is why they are priced accordingly.

Perceive risk and insurers history with car/region/age etc will factor into quote.
youngest/most inexperienced will drive the quote.

So to will annual mileage and shift work.
Colleague of mine hates finishing at midnight on a Saturday night because of what they meet on the road home.

It has nothing to do with the NCT.

The reason these older cars are loaded and classed as dangerous is because they are cheap to buy and ideal to use in false insurance claims/scams

Might be a part of the reason but I think it's more to do with overall claims experience.

Is have thought the older the car then the less they've to had out with write off etc

Then if people have older cars it's usual becuase not worth changing so they spend money keeping them in good shape

It's the 3rd party damages that count I'd say.

Older cars aren't as safe, resulting in worse injuries for occupants.

Older cars aren't kept as well. Look at the NCT stats. More and more parts wear and fail. They are in fact money pits.
