looking at building entrance walls about 18" wide, just wondering what wide / depth foundation should I dig?

I was told 30" wide by 12" deep , should I go wider? and deeper?

Who told you that? Your engineer?

I’d recommend get an engineers opinion on site.
The home bond manual may provide some
Guidance also assuming ground conditions are normal.

As a general rule the foundation width should be 3 times the wall width, so you have essentially the width of the wall free either side of the foundations.

Dept would depend on the wall height but 12" sounds fairly standard assuming its good ground.

you also want aprox 1/4 height of wall under finished ground level.

    Where does 3 come from?

    Op,
    18" wide? what material?
it also depends on the height of the wall and how much wind load it might take

Is it allowed to post links to engineering spreadsheets?

I'll report my own post just in case.

I found this site quite useful for rough calculations and to dissuade me from thinking that engineering is simple.
