Was thinking of changing to an electric car.
    I've an IS300H

It seems my options for 2019 at 50K euro are Hyundai
A leaf or similar is too small.

Was also thinking of holding off until 2020 for more options

    Any thoughts on same?

What kind of usage would you be looking at?

The Kona is likely too small for you if you think the Leaf is small.
Their is the Ioniq with it's 180km motorwat range, or later this year there is the Kia Niro which we predict could cover approx 380km on motorways.

Moving in to the end of 2019, expect the VW Neo, which is physically the same size as a Golf, but is meant to have the interior space of a Passat.
@50k you could look to import a UK 2nd hand Tesla.

I've seen 2015 Model S's under €50k on UK sites.
So early next year you should be able to nab a 2016 in your price range.

    Used model S?

If plug-in hybrid is included in your definition of electric car, then a used Porsche Cayenne S e-hybrid is worth considering. I bought in the UK and am very happy. Real-life range on battery is about 15 miles, but that's enough for me. There's a supercharged 3-litre V6 petrol engine as back-up!

I do a lot of city driving. I take long spins too, but I could switch to my wife's car if needed

Great idea. I know someone with a 2017 models. It might be up for renewal next year.

How did you find the IS300H and how come you want rid of it? Was thinking of upgrading to one early next year.

Kia Niro will be out next year. Bigger than the Kona.

The obvious answer is model 3 but without an existing reservation you won't see one before Q3 2020.

The new 44kWh i3S is launching this autumn. And BMW is bumping production capacity so the waiting lists shouldn't be as big of an issue.
~270-300km real world range and a way better car in the city. Turning circle is nearly as tight as a Fiat 500, you can turn 180 in most two lane roads without hitting the lines.
€50k would get you a very well option i3S BEV. And you could arrange a test drive now... the 44kWh is going to be the same thing as the current i3S with 70-100km more range.

Wouldn't touch the REx (I'm an i3 REx owner BTW... 160,000km on the odo). It's definitely a car that grows on you... best driving EV this side of a €91k I-Pace. RWD, near 50/50 weight distribution, lower CofG than the BMW 3 series.
I'm still tempted to cancel my model 3 reservation in favor of buying another i3.

You'd be surprised how practical the i3 is, I've managed to fit a washing machine and dishwasher in back at the same time. The cabin volume is bigger than the current 3-series.

You'd be waiting until 2020 to bring one in under budget. Unless the UK goes no deal brexit and then we can pick up the demos for a sack of potatoes from whatever feudal warlords control middle england (not new ones... they're built in Austria).

Yeah it's a bit ambiguous. He wants full electric but he is obviously not aware what's out there and if there even is a full electric option for his needs by 2019. If not he might have to go PHEV

From reading between the lines, I reckon he wants a new car. Not second hand.

Hard Brexit = WTO (World Trade Organisation) rules apply
WTO rules = 23% VAT levied on all used cars imported from U.K., on top of VRT
Therefore Hard Brexit = the end of used car imports from UK......

... and the UK dealer takes of the 17.5% (?) KU VAT, exactly as is actually happening now - there's no VAT Difference post-brexit for imports carried out by dealers which are the vast vast majority of imports.

lots of things change post hard brexit - VAT is not one of them....

If you import a used car from outside the EU, you have to pay both VAT and VRT on the car when you import it. Because the UK is in the EU, and VAT has already been paid on the car in the UK, there is currently an exemption from having to pay VAT again. VAT only needs to be paid once in the EU, in other words.

Roll forward to April 2019, when the UK crashes out of the EU with no deal, then it is treated just like any other non-EU country. And VAT will be payable.

Don’t believe me? Try importing a used car from a non-EU country now. Oh and make sure to argue that VAT was paid in the original country!!

VRT is.a REGISTRATION tax. All cars must also pay VAT. If VAT has already been paid in the EU, then it doesn’t need to be paid twice.

But when the Uk crashes out, sin scéal eile......

I imported a vehicle from the US 2 years ago. I had to pay customs duty, Vat, VRT.

But.. I did not have to pay VAT (sales tax) when I purchased the car, because I purchased for export. Now that was purchasing from the US so perhaps the US has a specific tax treaty with Ireland to allow for the no double VAT but I doubt it.

Electric ideally, maybe hybrid plug in, not hybrid again

That's it. The i3 is looking good.

I really want an electric car, I don't want to offend anyone by saying I don't want a leaf!!

    You are correct.

Apart from a clk for a couple of years I've had new Lexus IS models for about 18 years.

I don't like the look of the smaller electric cars.

The i3 is looking good at the minute.

You guys are correct 50k second hand is not really something I want to do.

I do know of a model S in the UK that would come free then. I could even get it as a company car. I handed back.my company car in the recession 2010 as 9.5K PA BIK on a 2007 Merc was killing me, it was valued at only 19K then having been 65 K in 2007. I'd already paid 28.8 K BIK at that stage

I made up my mind not to spend that much on a car again and limit my yearly depreciation to 5Kish PA. With a 50K limit.

So I went back other an IS 220 and then the IS300H. But I paid cash for them

Again you are all correct, I am not sure what is out there and available, I'd like a full electric IS300 as it's the perfect size for me. This is the longest I've ever had a car

However it's looking like maybe 2020 at best and a commitment to 2025 for Lexus to have electric options.

With BIK at 0 for company cars I'm tempted. However as you know BIK will.apply to the value of a new car again once the government scrap that.

You'll have guys with 3 year old electric cars with BIK hitting them.for the first time

BTW thank you all again for the help. The motors forum has been excellent for me over the years

Looks like you could spend more but you are limiting yourself to €50k?

You might reconsider. A new Tesla Model S is about €90k last time I looked. This might look like a lot, but you still have zero BIK. For this reason alone, the Model S is the best selling EV in the Netherlands. And of course your running costs would be almost zero and you would never have to worry about charging on the move because of the network of superchargers already in place (yes even in Ireland). Do some sums and you might be surprised. The Model S is the least depreciating car of all cars (not just EV) in the UK.

We all know the leaf is ugly, even us owners :D
The new one looks good though.

Looked at some i3 reviews last night.

TBH I think the new leaf looks better (and the new leaf is a far better looking car than the old model)

I think I'll aim at the S3 in from the UK in 2019/2020 and maybe see what breaks in between.

Why wouldn't you not look at the rec option? I am looking at getting the i3s Rex next and I like the flexibility of the backup motor.
