Time for Dublin port tunnel speeding fine to be issued?

First time driving through the Dublin port tunnel for the craic with the kids last Sunday evening around 8PM coming home from a family outing. The road was very quiet and I didn't pay much heed to speed though did notice at times it was over the 80 limit and I was driving at 90 or so so slowed down.
My average was definitely closer to 90 i'd say than 80. I should have just set cruise control ...
I haven't had a speeding fine or anything else in well over 10 years and I'd rather pay my fine and move on.
Does anyone know how long it takes to get it in the post/how long before i know i'm in the clear (unlikely) at the moment?

Given you were cruising at 90km/h, your real speed was likely much lower given speedo's tend to display higher than your real speed. You also mentioned you slowed down a little at times.

To your added possible benefit, the system may not have been switched on (Pretty common in Ireland on the whole) and the tolerance could be set high (For example, they'll only bother nailing someone doing 95km/h or more on average) Remember, it's an average, not your instantaneous speed so to actually drive through a tunnel at an average of 90km/h, you have to do the entire thing at a decent pace. They also add a little to allow for variances (Upwards of 3 to 5% on some systems)

All told, I'd say you'll hear nothing as you weren't actually speeding or you were on the cusp.

But, if you are to hear something, anywhere between a few days to 6 weeks.

Don't know about the port tunnel and how many sets of cameras they have, but on the A1 in Northern Ireland they have several sets and different ones are live at different times.

Problem is you don't know which.

I'd say its 50/50 whether you get the ticket

Thanks, I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I was reading that on the first day a van driver got 3 or 4 tickets.
He used it several times and was caught each time
It's average speed so only needs 2 cameras. One at the start and finish

just checked and it is just a set at the beginning and at the end of the tunnel in both directions with 4.8km separating the two sets.

So you'd need to be above 80km on average from the entire 4.8km to have a chance of getting a ticket and I would suspect a little leeway is given to 85/90km but that's just a guess.

I am in same situation. Passed tunnel on Tuesday and cruise control set at 83 kmph throughout.

Did you get the fine? If so after how many weeks?

I use the port tunnel regularly and set cruse control at 90km/hr and have never gotten a speeding fine.
Car going 90 is probably only going 85km/hr in reality and then the cameras would have to have a give in them of probably 5% so knock another 4.5-5km/hr off that and my average is around 80-81km/hr. You'd never get a speeding fine for that.

Yeah I'd say the port tunnel average speed cameras would have a higher tolerance than a fixed point speed camera, you could legally cut all the bends in the tunnel by changing lanes which would result in I'd guess a few meters saved in distance and therefore a quicker average time.

While I understand your reasoning I would never willingly set it at 90 at that place based on how many "probably" you used in your post.

Brave man. Probably 85, probably 5%... I would rather set it on 83 km/h or maybe even 80. I pay extra premium for last 3 years for a short moment of going 90 in 80 on a straight road on Christmas Eve. Never again. No need to test your luck.

Never got the fine thank god and used it several times since - with the cruise control set as recommended above. A lot less speedo watching and stress afterwards! :D
