Dog bite

I was out walking last week and 2 Staffordshire bull terriers came running out of a house and onto the road. One ran up behind me and but the back of my ankle. He broke the skin and drew blood. I screamed and no body came out to help. The dogs went back into the house. I am 22 weeks pregnant. I went to doctor to get tetanus and got cut cleaned and dressed.
My husband went down to the house later that evening and told the owners what happened. They apologised and said his electric collar was broken.
I want to report the incident but my husband thinks they have apologised and to leave it. We are neighbours. I just think what if it was a child?!

    Glad you are ok.

Dogs biting people or other dogs for that matter is unacceptable to me.

Your should report it...but tell the neighbours first, that might be hard but will be easier than talking to them afterwards.

Had a staffie before lovely dog. Used to run up to people and lick them. Used to scare the **** outta people the couple of times it happened.

Owners that think electric collar is ok, should not be dog owners. Just my opinion, others will differ. But same type of owners think a dog can bite people and sorry is ok, its not.

A similar thing happened to me last year however, it was my dog that was bitten.

If you want to report it you will have to go to the Garda station to make a formal complaint and it will possibly go to court. Only you can decide if this is the avenue you want to take.

Personally, I would definitely be handing them the doctor's receipt and getting them to pay for it, if they haven't already (which really, they should have).

Hope you're okay. It's such a frightening experience.

Horrible vicious type of dog that was bred to fight and maim, you were lucky this is on the restricted breeds list and they are highly strung dangerous animals, I am a dog lover but bull terriers should be banned, all too often this happens, it could have been so much worse, look that dog has the taste for blood now and it can only get worse, do the right thing and make sure it is destroyed. You wont forgive yourself if you hear in the future that it has attacked or even killed a child.

Let's stop the "what if it killed a child" hysteria.

Can you link me to a single incident in Ireland that a child was killed by a dog????

So, without hysterics see it as it was. An accidental incident that the owners did not know about initially and hopefully will ensure it won't happen again.

Maybe ask them what they are doing to ensure it doesn't happen again as someone could be injured and that could lead to a claim against them which would also lead to the dogs being put down.

If their answers give you assurance, then leave it at that.

heres one (of many ) from not so far away, it could easily happen here too. The dog has been blooded now in effect it has to be destroyed.

    Folks. Everyone.
Every time there's a dog bite thread, someone who rarely/never uses the forum comes along and posts hysterical hyperbole which is usually not supported by stats in any country, anywhere.
The above post is a classic example.
So, for the sake of saving this thread from the train wrecks they usually become, I'm going to intervene at this early stage and say to everyone reading this thread who's thinking about posting... Do not follow this trend of scaremongering posting. I have no problem at all with people giving differing opinions, let me make that abundantly clear... But hysterical, shrieky stuff like the quoted post, will simply not fly, no matter what side of the argument you're on.
What definitely will not fly, at any level, is people castigating any one particular breed, unless they can come up with peer-reviewed research or expert opinion pieces to support their argument.
If anyone, on either side of this debate, breaches this request, their posts will be deleted, and they will receive an automatic red card at the minimum.
Do not reply to this post on thread.
    Thanks.

I have to say as a dog lover and a survivor of a fairly horrendous dog attack , (by a "harmless" golden lab) please report. Any dog that bites once cant be trusted. I own a dog and while it would break my kids and my heart I could never handle the guilt, my understanding is the law requires destruction of a dog that bites ?

As a five year old I happened to walk by a dog at the wrong time, seven ops, four skin grafts and a heck of a lot of hard work later we were advised he had bit a few times but was harmless, would be kept in.

Needless to say i am biased but it galls me to hear people dismiss it. I am sorry but next time it might be more than a tetanous needed.

OP only you can decide what to do. There is no hard and fast rule about your situation. As others have said you will need to report to the Guards and supply a medical report via your GP.

Also am really sorry you have gone through it, as an animal lover I get really angry when I hear stories like this because in truth, the fault lies with the owners and however they trained or provided lack there of.
