I understand its circa 560kms on a dedicated cycle path which is largely paved. It takes in the Brenner Pass and goes through Germany, Austria and Italy.
    Has anyone done this?
Could it be done on a road bike or is a commuter / tourer required?
I'd appreciate any info or tips from anyone that has done it.

Not done the route (but I've done West Africa on a bike so I guess I can give some general advice) although a googlemap seems to show a non motorway/tolled route so in terms of CAN you do it I suppose so.

As for the technicalities... lots depends on how much time you have, how fit you are, what type of bike and gearing you already have, whether you plan on or want to camp out or if you're well off to just consider staying in accomodation the entire time....
