Gravel Driveway Refresh

Hiya Google is failing me on this one (keeps coming back with fishtank gravel advice!) but does anyone know if it's possible to top up an existing gravel driveway with a different type of gravel?

The current gravel is a dark grey, which gives the house a harsh feeling. We wanted to lighten with a much warmer light brown/cream gravel. Presumably a fresh topping of different gravel would look great to start with and then the lower layer would start to bleed through making it look awful?

Any advice, thoughts, greatly appreciated. i.e. just a topping would work, or you'd need to dig out x amount, or whether it's a complete replacement job etc.

I can't see why you just dont ad topping to existing. Unless you want all bright stone. Waste of money imo. I have to top up my drive way every few years.

The important bit of a gravel driveway (or any driveway) is the load bearing base. The top layer is just cosmetic.

If the base is properly constructed, it shouldn't "bleed through" as you describe, so you can replace the surface dressing with something prettier.

Don't just throw more gravel on top of the existing loose topping. It'll be too deep and will look ugly when it mixes.

This is not professional advice. I just have a gravel driveway I've done a bit of maintenance on.
