Its only a short ferry trip between Macau and Hong Kong which is well worth visiting. 8 hour stopover on the flight in Xiamen would be torture though.

There are some Portuguese ruins there and I did like that part of it. The casinos are mental, I've never been to Vegas but I'd imagine that Vegas would be a lot more fun.

It's a very short boat ride to Hong Kong and Hong Kong is only about an hour from Chine. I did all 3 when I was there

Afaik you are provided with a free hotel room on a long stopover with xiamenair. Or a city tour. Or lounge access. Your choice!

How did you manage the China visa situation?

It's a local train that you take from Hong Kong, I'm sure it was only about 45 mins.

You can get a visa in immigration for that particular region, Shenzhen. For the rest of China you have to apply for a visa as far as I know but Shenzhen is different.

We didn't go a whole lot there, just checked out the local markets and wandered about. If you do go then don't try the chicken, mank!

I've been to Shenzen and had to get a visa from Chinese embassy. This was a few years ago now though.

You don't need a Chinese visa for either Macau or Hong Kong.

As for Macau the Cotai Strip away from the main city is very Vegas like with gigantic hotels but I couldn't understand most of the table games they were playing so different in that regard. You have to go through security scanning in each hotel before entering gaming area.. something that isn't the case in Vegas. It doesn't have the same buzz as Vegas in terms of being a party city.

Macau has got to be one of the most boring places in the world if you want to party (Irish style)

It took us 30 minutes to find the 2 pubs in the Venetian (and both were more restaurants than pubs).
It is basically, Big fancy hotels, Lots of queues (and Queue skipping), overpriced food, lots of smokers and expensive minimums at tables

There’s table service as per Vegas in most of the casinos
I only ever saw them delivering coffee to keep the gamblers awake!
