Can't advise you on route, but cycling through Galway city on a weekend matchday is awful in my experience.

If I get anywhere near the city in time I’ll b fine, match is at 6 on Saturday evening so shud leave good time..

    Thanks

the most straightforward route from Athlone is the old N6, through Ballinsaloe, Aughrim, Kilreekil, Loughrea, Craughwell, Oranmore. hard shoulder most of the way save for a few km after Aughrim.

I've not done it myself despite my recurring plans to do so, plenty here have and should be able to help out. works out at about 90km to Eyre square.

edit...recent thread discussing Athlone to Galway is here

Would you not be better off going via cavan, Longford and Roscommon rather than due south to Athlone and then due west to Galway?
