I'm currently reading an excellent book by a lady called Isabella Tree called "Wilding". It documents the return to nature of a 3,500 acre estate in Sussex owned by herself and her husband.

Run as an arable and dairy farm the estate was steadily losing money and ever greater intensification was only exacerbating the problem.

So, in the year 2000 they decided to take advantage of EU setaside grants and started letting nature take over. Eventually with the help of the EU and British Government environmental initiatives they were able to allow nature take over the whole estate with only minimal intervention and the introduction of a small number of hardy, free ranging native species such as Exmoor ponies, English longhorn cattle and Tamwort pigs.

Wildlife has absolutely flourished and many threatened pieces have, without any intervention established themselves.

Do get the book and read it and have a look at their website which has a few very good videos. https://knepp.co.uk

I'll definitely put that on my "Must read" list. :)

Another great book is "A year's turning" by Michael Viney, it's about his observations on nature and wildlife over a year in a remote area of co. Mayo.
