Back bolier/fireplace dilemma

Hi, not necessarily "doing this myself" but not sure where to post my query.
Our house has an old solid fuel fireplace which has a back burner. There hasn't been a fire lit in it since the late 80s. Since then we've had gas central heating installed at which point the boiler was disconnected.
We want to start using the fireplace again just as a feature and to heat the room.
We seem to be faced with 2 options :

1.Replace existing back burner and hook up to the system
2.Remove back burner and adapt fireplace accordingly.
Im just wondering which option would be cheaper to have carried out in the home. And what roughly I should be expecting to pay.
We also need to replace the fireplace surround.
    Any advice much appreciated.
