Buying a Toll tag

    Hi,
Would like to purchase the electronic thing to use the eToll system ( Limerick Tunnel ). The website tells me I need to pick a provider and then each provider has options.

    1) Whats Rental/Purchase Tag?

    2) I just want a charge for what I use, or perhaps a top up my account system - which is best?

I really do not want to pay an "admin fee per month" whatever that is for?

Any advice which system best suits me? Also when you get the tag, is it a sticker?

It's a little box about the size of a matchbox that you attach to the windscreen (comes with a holder) behind the rear view mirror and its picked up by the toll gates as you approach it and the charge made to your account

Personally I have an eflow post-paid one that sends me a bill every month for my usage. I have no time for prepay stuff in general though - having to worry about keeping the balance in credit or allowing the company to deduct from my account at random intervals, is not for me

A rented tag costs usually 50c+/month more in fees; a purchased one usually costs about 20 quid and the provider usually requires paid replacement after 10 years, so you save about 40 quid+ over ten years. Up to you if you value that. Bugger all inflation in the ten years since I got mine so it was worth it; if we had 1980s inflation it'd be a false economy.

All tags have a monthly admin fee. No way around it. The tag is a matchbox sized unit, you can often hide it behind the rear-view mirror unless that area has too much of the black dots on it.

The account vs topup thing is really personal preference. Nearly all of them require single tag private users to pre-pay anyway so the account gives the advantage that they take the cash when needed and you don't drive up to the barrier with an empty credit balance. However it has the disadvantage that they take the cash when they want - if you run a tight card balance that's not good. There are some post-pay options but they're still direct debit.

The legal requirement for the toll operators to give multi-use discounts was never updated to understand tags, so there is a system to get (slightly) cheaper tolls but it requires you to use the kiosks - http://www.limericktunnel.com/Multi_Trip_Cards.aspx
