Pay regarding travelling for work

    Hi All,

    Quick question. If I work for a company, based in Dublin for example, and they ask me to travel to assist in another facility of the same company, let's say in the USA, am I entitled to be paid for the time spent travelling? I would have assumed I'm travelling for work, therefore it counts as being at work?
    Anyone up to speed on this?

    It depends on your contract. Typically a contract includes terms for travel/frequency, but usually there is no extra pay for the actual travel time involved. Your manager might give you a day in lieu or something, it all depends. But the answer is no, typically you will be expected to travel to a certain extent and the travel time will be on you.

    I'm not too sure about the legalities about it. For me it always very much depended on what and when, ie what was I travelling for and was it week days or weekends.

    In the end we came to an agreement I'd claim half overtime for any time spent travelling on weekends. ie travel 8 hours on a sunday, claim 4.

    Having said that, that was only because I traveled an awful lot and it was impacting family life. If it's just the odd time I'm not sure I'd rock the boat beyond perhaps asking for a day in lieu or something.

    It depends on your contract.For me travelling to the US i can expect a minimum of 24 hours pay - calculated as normal pay rate for first 8 hours,1.5 hours for the next 5 hours and the remaining 11 hours at double pay.Any expenses incurring are paid with receipts.I would ,also be allowed recovery time i.e. not expected to go to work straight from the flight.If,your manager is amenable you might be able to negotiate an arrangement.

    I have something similar in place at the moment, in agreement with my direct manager. However apparently HR department are asking questions and causing problems now.
