Motor tax issue

Have tried Googling and calling the Motor Tax office with zero luck so hoping i can get some help

I bought a second hand car from dealership 28/06
The tax was out 02/18 when we bought it - all grand

Got the vehicle registration cert in post 05/07 and went onto Motortax.ie to tax the car only when i log in it says

"According to our records, a tax disc for this vehicle was requested online and has now been posted to the registered owner's address. If you have not received your disc 5 working days after you requested it, please contact the Motor Tax Online helpline"

Its been saying that since i got the vehicle registration on 05/07

Now I haven't taxed it. Have rang the dealership and they haven't taxed it. They had the car 2 weeks before we bought it.

So at the moment, I have no valid tax disc, nor can i buy a tax disc either online or in the local tax office

I believe i can fill in a form and get it stamped in garda station to declare the disc lost so i can get a new one issued but this seems like a weird thing to do since i can't confirm the existence of one having been lost.

Any help appreciated as google, calling motor tax and calling into local office have really gotten me nowhere.

    TIA

I'd chance my arm and see if you can get the disc paperwork stamped as lost and maybe get some free tax out of it :) Minus the admin fee of course but could be worth a shot

I might well have to do this as I can't tax it at the moment, but i can't report it lost until it's been over 5 days, so will have to wait until after tomorrow then get the form stamped and go back to the tax office. Bit of a PITA.

I don't believe i will end up with free tax anyhow - that's not how the universe works :D

I'd maybe give it till after the weekend. Although usually the tax discs arrive fairly promptly.

Is there any chance anyone else decided to tax it for you somehow?

If anything I'd be more concerned about the whole 'registered owner' thing than than not being able to tax it (for now)

I wouldn't be too optimistic but hey ya never know :) Be sure to let me know if it works just so I can sit and laugh at a motor tax logo :D

I'm not remotely optimistic of a tax disc arriving - or to be able to declare one missing etc.

I would however love to be able to pay the tax, display the disc and then drive my new car :D

Is there such a thing as auto re-newal for tax? Like would it be possible that the previous owner had it set to auto re new once it had expired and just forgot to cancel it when they sold the car?

I don't think that's possible. Unless there's some options on the motortax site that I've mised

The tax is out since Feb though so if it was the previous owner who ordered it, either on purpose or by accident, there would be a more recent tax disc on the car now!

Is there a chance it was tax exempt while previous owner had it?

I'm not sure. I'm guessing not as it was previously taxed until Feb. Also its just a bog standard 2008 1.1

Have a look on motortax.ie for the tax rate using the cars reg.

Op. Try placing an Ad for your Car on carsireland.ie You can just enter gibberish for your own details, just make sure your Reg number is correct. It will immediately show you the NCT and Tax expiration Dates for this Car.
If it is indeed taxed then the choice is yours. You can either order a replacement disc or just drive as is. Really depends on the expiration date of the current disc (if it is taxed).

    Great suggestion!
The NCT due date showed up correct!
The tax due date showed up Feb 2019!

Apply for a replacement disc. It's only €6.......
I would guess the previous owner taxed it and just didn't put up the new disc.

What address was the disc posted to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,496 ✭✭✭irishgrover

In the hopefully non insulting spirit of "sometimes it's the most obvious thing"..... Are you sure you used the correct reg number when applying?

The previous owner...as they were the registered owner last February.

No idea! I got the vehicle registration cert last Thursday, and no disc has come to my address so far.

Even if it did turn up here in the next day or two, it still doesn't make any sense!

OP just download an RF134 form, fill it out, get it stamped at your local Garda Station and send it off with a cheque for €6.
In the 'circumstances' box simply explain that you purchased the car and the disc was missing.

    Thats the plan right now!

Totally forgot to update! So got the tax disc last Friday by bringing the RF134 form and the princely sum of 6euros to the motor tax office! For whatever reason, the previous owner taxed the car, kept/lost the disc then sold to car dealership

    Cheers mgbgt1978 :)

Sorry for bumping an old thread but my GF has the same issue and she taxed it before. I was thinking it was taxed until the end of January that's why she is getting the message but she is in work so cannot check.

    Does my thinking seem plausible?

Maybe start a a new thread instead of using a 4 year old one...
