Grease nipples

I bought a second hand grab recently.

I cannot get any of the grease nipples to take grease no matter how much pressure is put on them.

It is possible that the grease nipples can get stuffed or seized ? Will replacing the grease nipples sort the issue ?

    Ta

Grease will go hard in the nipples but mostly in the pins and bushings you are greasing. This is what causes the blockage normally.
I usually take them off and try to squeeze grease through to free the nipples. Scrape away what you can of the hard grease inside where you removed the nipples and try greasing again. Work the grab a few times if you get grease in. Just keep greasing and moving the grab until you have fresh grease peeping out the sides of the pin

If that doesnt work, soak the nipples in a small bit of diesel over night. That should disolve the grease.

    Cheers folks

Hopefully tomorrow evening I’ll have the grease flowing to it :)

Get an old clean grease tube put new petrol in it you'll have to hold it vertical when you pump the nipples it should free them out

If the nipples are blocked surely the easiest thing would be to replace them? buy a selection box of nipples and swop them out if required,

One other thing to try is take the pressure off the pin your trying to grease. If its tight to the housing it can be tough to get grease through

    Cheers for all the replies:)

Had a go at it yesterday evening, I put the grease nipples in the vice and gave them a pump with the grease gun and it the geese flowed through them so I now know the nipples themselves are not the problem.

Filling the grease gun with petrol sounds like the easiest option I’ll try this evening and I’ll try moving the grab up and down too should hopefully free it up.

Im not sure filling a grease gun with petrol is a good idea, it sounds like the beginning of a story you would hear in a casualty dept...

After reading this thread, ordered an assortment of metric/ imperial grease nipples on eBay. A pain having to move them around a machine when one breaks or falls out. Ordered imperial ones before and sure as hell, the last time I needed them they were metric. Borrowed a haybob recently and there were 3 missing from it.

Just spray a bit of WD40 in to where the grease is gone hard or diesel would probably do also. I doubt a grease gun is capable of pumping petrol anyway so no point wasting your time

7mm spanner and replace them. Be the life of it. And use a cordless or pneumatic gun on it to force I through the rams for the first fill. You will waste more time messing with old nipples

Nipple off and clean hole with few strands of steel wire. Still won't work need to move the pins about.

    Hi Lab man

    Not good

I couldn’t get the grease gun to pump the petrol as it kept leaking through.

I would be afraid to pull the pins out of it in case I couldn’t get them lined up properly again.

Wil leave to my local handy man.

Anyone using those screw in grease catridges? They never empty fully and usually are almost quarter full when the gun stops pumping.

Using Fuchs gun here no probs emptying cartridges, only prob is finding the odd air pocket in a cartridge.

Had to laugh when I re-read my own post too. :D

Heads up that is not going to do your geese any good at all. I reckon they could be fairly peeved afterwards!

Did you clean the holes in the grab as well might help.

I would give it a little heat with burner sweat the grease out a bit. It's probably glar by this stage . Get a cordless or pneumatic as a hand one won't pump enough to force it through. Been there done that

I push the last quarter out of the cartridge with a stick! can be handy to put on things such as the sliding rails on a tractor lift, grease the rails on pallet forks etc etc.

Apart from the front axle, pick up hitch and certain parts of the 3 point linkage are there other parts to grease on a tractor?
