Herd number

Quick enough one. Is there any benefit to setting up a herd number from scratch as opposed to changing over the name or making the existing one joint? The only advantage I'm seeing now is lower numbers so we will have less duplicate numbers in the herd lol! I'm currently not named on the herd number but I have authority to work with it and I was thinking getting my name on it might make things easier going forward if it was needed.
    Thanks in advance

Iirc, a new herd number will need separate animal handing facilities for both herds and both will have to be kept separate.

Easiest job would be joint herd number or change over to your own name, assuming that won't complicate any future transfers to you?

For the young farmer grants recently they were basing eligibility on 5 years since date you got herd number - so just be careful not shafting yourself by having clock ticking there.

Thanks butford. We will only have one herd number going forward as there is no need for2. And that's what I'm trying to decide just to move to a joint number or set up from scratch. Dads fine either way and it won't make a difference re future transfers.
I'm not sure if it really matters to much TBH

Was in a similar situation myself recently.
Father passed away so I just kept the existing herd #.
Seemed to keep everything more straight forward.
I'm still only the Herd keeper though for now as I have to sort out the will and probate etc.
Thought there was red tape in farming, I'd recommend a transfer instead of wills.
