Can you take a bottle of beer out of a pub?

For the last year or so I've been sticking a bottle of beer in my pocket for the walk home when I leave the pub. I feel like I'm smuggling cocaine when I walk past the bouncers out to the street. Totally paranoid.

Am I over reacting? Can we actually take a beer outside? I'm not stealing a fancy glass or anything.

Any bouncers/barmen/bargirls/barpersons here who can let me know if I can wander off with a bottle (not a pint glass) for my walk home?

What's worrying is that you need the beer for the walk...

Have you ever heard of "one for the road"? Except this time I'm taking it with me.

Actually good idea now-a-days and can be used as a means of self defense if necessary!/

if the pub knows you're taking it, and it's after 10, it's a no no I think, because otherwise the off license rules would be pointless. but I've had bartenders in pubs where they knew me do it for me, and even agree to leave the cap on so I could take it home handily (i wasn't drinking it while walking)

carrying an open container is supposed to be illegal, but rarely enforced, especially during nights when many are out on the town. here in the northwest, unless you're unconscious or extremely loud, or violent the cops don't bother with drunk people doing drunk people things, especially if they're in a group.

but most bouncers will take issue with it if they see it, probably would take it off you or make you finish it before leaving. if everyone was taking bottles out into the street it would be mayhem, glass smashed everywhere etc

Most bouncers won’t let you out with a bottle just in case you batter someone with it.. most places probably would pour it into a plastic cup for you if you wanted.. plus many councils enforce a no alcohol in public by law so technically the cops could also take it from depending on where you are..

I'd often have a bottle cap or two in the coats that I'd wear when going drinking. Would allow me to smuggle a bottle in the coat for the bus home.

Actually now thinking about it, I'd consider buying a handful of these to put into my coat pockets; no jingle, and I'd be able to pocket my own and a mates beer for the bus home.
