Weed licking advice

Hi folks. I’m thinking of hiring a weed wiper for a few days to tackle a few fields that has really strong rushes. The tank is 75 litres. I was thinking of either using Mortone or M50 to kill them. What ratio to water would you recommend ? How many litres of mortone to 75 litres of water?

How long should I get out of a tank? Also how often would I want to be activating the pump?

    Thanks

    Sirus.

There’s no need for a selective product in a weedlicker.

Roundup / Gallup at 5% concentration works perfectly and will be a fraction of the cost.

I activate pump every 60-80 yards for approx 3 secs. If no rushes in sight I leave well enough alone and sometimes if coming to dense rushes I give a bit extra. It's really trial and error. Use washing up liquid to help it stick, it also gives a nice glaze so you can see what's done.

Is it too dry to weed lick. I would be interested in opinions.

I licked a bit about two weeks ago. Did it late in the evening and the rushes are dieing off well at this stage.

Seems that above all plants rushes are still actively growing if a bit slower than usual.
It just shows the piece of **** plants they are that they can survive no matter what. !

If the rushes are really strong in dense clumps, I would suggest licking in both directions. I did this 2 years ago with an area of dense rushes and they have not grown back.
As others have said use washing up liquid as a sticker.
Also travel very slowly to allow the roller give a good lick.

Thanks lads. How much ground would you expect to cover with the small tanks?

It sounds like with a 75 litre tank I’d want to add in 5 litres of gallop / roundup etc??

In relation to the washing up liquid. Are you just adding that in the tank or squirting it on the roller? My rushes are the height of myself so really want to kill them off the first time.

I taught you would need to cut rushes first ??????

Mine are nearly too strong too top. I’m going to try and kill them first and then top them.

MCPA sprays are not allowed to be used in weedlickers https://www.teagasc.ie/media/website/publications/2018/Use-of-Pesticides-Newsletter-June2018.pdf

Depends on how heavy the rushes are. I've done 3 acres on a tank and over 10 acres on a tank. Just keep the roller wet but not dripping

At 5% you'd be talking around 3.75 litres. If you're going any stronger make sure your sums add up when recording the usage in the book.

Just add the washing up liquid to the tank. If the rushes are that high you'd get a better kill licking them from both directions.

If your using Gallup, I think you just be wasting the Mortone by adding it in the mix. Gallup will kill everything that the Mortone would.

I think Ill just stick to one to be honest. Mix it with the water and the washing up liquid!

    That's 75/5= 15/1. Thats plenty strong. I use 20/1 or 25/1 myself.

Add to the tank when adding water.

If your rushes are that strong your never going to lick them off on one go.

    I’d use 3l in a 75 l tank.

Also, I’m not sure how much area you have to lick but 75l sounds like allot of mix for a weed licker. We made this mistake in the past and ended up draining it out into drums to store so we could rinse out the pump etc.

Maybe make up 20l and see how that goes, you can always mix more but you can’t un mix it.
1 litre in 20 water would be plenty strong.

Hi Brian. I’d have no issue using up 75 litres as have a lot of ground to cover. How many acres would you normally lick with 20 litres?

It should do at least 10 acres of heavy rushes

I was thinking 75 litres would do 10 acres? Surely 20 litres of mix wouldn't do that much? Im thinking the tank is quiet small and it is a 75 litre tank.

Add to the tank when adding water.

They reckon 30 or 40 to 1 is the best ratio.
If you mix it too strong you burn the leaves and the spray doesnt get a chance to go down to the roots .
The weaker it is the more it will travel to the roots

With all the products out there now what do people find is the best when using a licker.
For rushes I use Mortone and Agroxone 50.
For docks I tried Dockstar and did not find it great, I also used Forefront on a field for docks and it killed the rushes as well.
    What about Grazon 90 ?
