Career break for public servant

For a public servant taking a 2 yr career break from a permant job, am I correct that they would not need to do anything for prsi to protect their retirement pension? Also has anyone taken such a break and made arrangements to continue paying into their pension? Am utterly clueless here and struggling to get answers.
