Bale Trailer / Straps

Very grey are and I would suspect it to be the guards own interpretation of what defines an ''Unsecured load'' to be.

During the fodder crisis in spring, some farmer was featured on the garda twitter page with a bale trailer like that. I think he was issued points for an unsecured load but it did have a top row of bales extra.

Be talking up to 8 ton depending on the silage. Unbraked would be sore on it

On the public road the load would need to be secured like any other trailer..

There were pictures on the Farda twitter page of a farmer stopped with similar bale trailer and given fixed penalty for unsecured load.

Still see lots of lads with bales bouncing about in them but if you wanted to be sure throw a strap across them.

Bit mad really unless ur doing something badly wrong u cant loose a bale on 1 of them trailers.

Sure u dont need to strap them on a bale lifter and it works with same principle.

If you need to question something you already know it's iffy.

I lost a bale of haylage off one of them a few years ago, but I hadn't loaded it onto the trailer and he was putting 10 onto it. (2 across the top also)

they are a handy trailer but not suited to soft hands if using wrapped bales

Does everyone agree with moving wrapped bales from field to store bound to be a lot more damaged bales!

It'll be alright until someone is killed on the side of the road while checking straps, rather than just driving sensibly and keeping an eye on the bales in the mirrors

I imagine you'd be looking at four straps to really be sure....unless someone has a better plan

That's the thing, there at the start of the year they had someone up on twitter who had I believe 11 bales on a flat bale trailer (8 on the bottom row and 3 in the middle on top) he had some sort of a strap thrown around the load and I think one across the top row.

He got done for unsecured/improperly secured load (an RSA checkpoint iirc).

The argument was each pair of bales should have been strapped on the bottom row and each individual bale on the top row.

In my opinion thats major overkill but tbh the main issue is a huge lack of clarity on the matter and massive inconsistencies in how the law is applied.

There was another interesting one of a fella drawing straw with a cattle lorry
(he had coffin bales strapped along the top of the livestock box) .

The argument being he was overweight but imo there's no way the load pictured totalled the estimated weight they had up on twitter interestingly enough no follow up tweet was forthcoming from the weigh bridge...

My sister was very near killed a few years ago. She was out painting the front gates (two 6') of the house and a bale of hay fell off the back of one of those trailers. She was on the outside facing in and so didn't see anything until it rolled in on top of her. Only for the gates werent latched and pushed in, she could have been crushed rightly. Got away with a bruised leg and ankle.

I was out the yard and heard the screams. When l seen she was alright and mother was with her, l tore off in the car after yer man. Caught up with him a mile up the road, he hadn't even realised what had happened. I was fit to be tied.

Goes to show how important it is to have lights, straps, chain to tractor, etc. looking good so as not to attract attention to other matters

That’s what I was thinking too ....surly if those trailers required a strap .....then the bale handler would require a strap?

What are those trailer like to lift wrapped bales on and off with the roller type bale handler on the front loader ?
