Music on FM104 played at a higher pitch?

Anyone else notice that not only does FM104 play the same ‘Top 40’ crap every two hours, but for some inexplicable reason whenever I’ve listened play it at a slightly higher pitch and (maybe) slightly faster as well. If it’s supposed to sound ‘cool’ it doesn’t.

Tunes are often played slightly faster in nightclubs (which will increase the pitch) so maybe it’s to emulate that?

Yes, they've done it for years.

Yeah I’m all for that in clubs and DJ mixes and all that, but when tunes are being played back to back it doesn’t have the same effect at all

Yet you still keep listening? The mind boggles. I would be allergic to Top 40 type stations and therefore don’t have them as presets in the car and avoid them at all costs.

It to speed up the song so they can play more songs and keep ads the same length.

The original idea was that subconsciously you think the station sounds brighter/more uptempo.
I first came across this in the 1980's Radio Nova.

Yes Nova & Kiss FM in the 80s, really drove their Optimod ( Music processor ) just over 100% mod . Now a lot of stations use break away software to make it sound louder but not distorted .

104 have played tracks at a slightly higher pitch for at least a decade.

Certain tracks suffer really badly from it - Years & Years - King being one. Most higher BPM tracks sound dead as **** when you hear them on another station after being used to the 104 version. It may be more suited to the era when euro trance was ruling the charts, but they're still #1 so it seems to work. And the ear-bleed Omnia is gone.

104 have been doing this for as long as i can remember. i actually quite like it being done if i'm honest.

certainly pirates are using it, and probably a few community stations. i'm not sure if the commercials do for their fm processing though.

I don’t listen either but have been in a number of places where it was playing

Fm104 always had a different sound about it, this probably explains why.
