My gp told me he couldn't either - has to be a consultant.

    G.P. can refer.
Our g.p. wanted my wife to have an m.r.i. to investigate her chronic migraine.
The waiting list was too long in the hospital so we picked one of the nearby private clinics, g.p. got in touch with them and we had it done within a week.
Maybe it depends on what they are investigating.

Any GP can refer you but only if they think there is a clinical need, they will not just refer you just because you ask.

In alot of public hospitals they only accept referrals from consultants.
In private hospitals a GP can refer.
So it depends if you are private or public.
