In light of the fact that yesterday a motorway was approved with an entrance to a housing estate onto it, could we see future upgrades/redesignations of motorways with relaxed rules on accesses ?

Could be relevant in relation to the N4 at Mullingar, N3/N4/N7 near Dublin, N18 near Limerick etc

Most of these have exits to places with no non motorway access so that isn't an option

    God I hope not

On of the reasons these are so much safer is because of the restrictions

Is it the one on page 2 here?

Would i be correct in saying its only an entrance, and not an exit?
If its only an entrance designed as a slip road I wouldn't have a problem with it.

However, the N18 actually has multiple driveways into houses along it, which is a total disaster and should never be allowed to become motorway.

Not to mention Cratloe village itself.

The "Mount Oval diverge" on Page 3. The existing entrance is being widened to a full slip road with gigantic cutting to fulfil this.

Yes, it's just an entrance into the estate but you can get out the other side of the estate and use the estate itself as a rat run.

Regarding the N18, the houses there can be fronted onto the R462 at the back can they not? There are much lower hanging fruit on that section of the N18 anyway, such as the dogs dinner of a T junction exit for Hurlers Cross which is sandwiched in between two grade seperated junctions for Hurlers Cross, and is located 300m before the off ramp for the R471 Shannon Town/Ballycasey exit.

It has always annoyed me that some farmers managed to put gates to their fields on the M6 before it was upgraded.

    Cratloe village? Or Bunratty village?

Setrights Cross exit is another one that could easily be closed as it's 500m or so for the GSJ that was supposed to replace it.

I always call Setrights cross Cratloe :D my bad.

The problem is the houses after the cross that have access to the road (edit, and just from google images, they don't even have access to the rear, so this is their only way in/out)

To be honest the only long term solution for those houses is CPO + demolition if they ever sort the N18

I laugh at people complaining on other threads about noise/air pollution when they live 1km from a motorway compared to those houses on the N18. Some of them are less than 10m from the M18 and the J5 offramp is up on their front wall.

I grew up down there, and I remember them building those roads (as a kid, it felt like they did about 3 or 4 miles at the time :p ), and there was a farm that had a beautiful orchard beside it, and it got CPOd bit by bit, by the time they were finished, the farmhouse ended up literally on one of the off-ramps (and no orchard at all left)

    This is them: https://www.google.ie/maps/@52.7074147,-8.8354928,3a,60y,308.9h,88.24t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sW-1bD62piTRJ4rdeSOjK2Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Thats all because that section of the N18 is very old and they dualled it by slapping a second carriageway down next to the first. Same on the N25 west of Midleton.
