Given a reserved seat in non-existent carriage

I'm currently on a train traveling towards Dublin. I booked my ticket online and selected automatic seat selection. The computer gave me a seat in carriage D but unfortunately the train only has three carriages (A/B/C). This wouldn't be a problem if the train wasn't jam-packed with dozens of people standing.

I presume there's a reasonable explanation for why at least one carriage is missing from the train. But maybe somebody can shed some light? Is this a regular occurrence? And would I be entitled to any sort of a refund?

(I don't even mind standing all that much- I'm mainly writing this out of curiosity, boredom, and a desire to vent a little...)

Train was to be serviced by a 4 piece ICR. Operational reasons maybe caused it to be replaced by a 3 piece set

Daily issue. Check out IE twitter. Full refund of reservation charge will be processed if u did not get another seat. I think the part IE miss is that this leads to an overall bad customer experience. But to be honest, they don't actually seem to care....
