Toyota warranty

    Bought 2ndhand Auris 151 from UK a few months ago from Main Toyota dealer.
    5 year warranty which we discussed and I understood to be Europe wide (not in writing).

    Awful spring rattle/ whine from it over last couple of days (timing chain???)
    Rang local Toyota garage here and told only honour a 3 year warranty here.
    Have I a leg to stand on in pushing for the 5 year warranty?
    Really annoyed; Only have the car a few months and can't flipping beleive it's giving me trouble already.

    Yeah unfortunately that's how it is, this a topic that seems to be arising more and more on here and not just with Toyota.

    In this case Toyota the manufacturer offers 3 years European wide cover, the 4th and 5th years of cover on UK cars is provided locally by Toyota UK the distributor and not the manufacturer so can not be honoured outside the UK.

    You don't really have anything that you could use to encourage an Irish dealer to look at it. Bringing it back to the UK or NoI is really your only option and even that isn't without its complications.

    *Maybe worth calling the UK dealer you bought from to see will they pay an Irish dealer via credit card etc to do the work to the car seeing as you were told by the salesman that the 5 year cover was Europe wide, there may be some hope they might so this seeing as you bought it quite recently from them.

    They could and the warranty would be honoured but that could turn into a bit of a nightmare unless you have some time and money to play around with.

    You need to be prepared for things like what if the fault doesn't show on the day, what if they can't track it down to a specific item, what if they do find the problem but they can't address it for a number of days, what if parts are unavailable, etc etc. An overnight trip could become 4 or 5 nights before you know it and when you add up the fuel used to get there and back, a few nights in a travel lodge and eating out three times a day you'd probably have paid for the car to be fixed down here.

    It'd be ideal if you could tie it in with a local holiday or something.

    Thanks guys. I had a mechanic friend look at it and it's the brake disc (doesn't have that traditional brake pads worn sound hence the confusion) so wouldn't have been covered by warranty anyway.
    But a sobering thought if something does go wrong. Driving north would have been an option albeit a very inconvenient one so for the sake of that I'd probably just have sucked up the cost and repaired it here, not to mention that depending on the issue a car might not be in a position to drive 200+ km.

    Is it a hybrid? The hybrid system warranty is 5 years (EU-wide), and can be extended to 10 with the annual "hybrid health check" (€50). Wouldn't have covered the brakes anyway...

    If buying from a business you have much more protection under consumer law than a warranty.

    Assuming the company you buy it from is still in business and actually engages.

    A manufacturers warranty is much safer than one from a car dealer. You are correct that your contract is with the seller.

    A Japanese import would be deemed a grey import not originally intended to be sold in the EU so wouldn't be covered by EU wide warranty.
