Do I need a transformer to charge a MacBook or an IPhone in the U.S or are they already built in?

No, just the us/3 pin adaptor.

important distinction here. as long as your using official apple chargers there's nothing you need to do bar going from IE 3 pin to US 2 pin.

How long are you going for? Bear in mind that, while the Apple manufacturer warranty will probably apply, your EU consumer rights (giving up to 6 year protection) will not be exercisable in the US. Just worth considering, as if they are out of warranty and go belly up, you might have to pay for service/repair.
