Hi folks just wondering if anyone might know the answer to this:

Married in 2014 and never nominated to be assessed as a married couple so still on single assessment. My partner during these years spent a few months each year on social welfare as he was working in a contract position. Would we be better off to be assessed as a married couple as this year will be the same situation and is it likely that we could be due a refund?

There's not enough info in your post. You can't be worse off jointly assessed. You can also request to be jointly assessed form 2015 onwards and look for a year of marriage review for 2014.

Thanks relax I'm not sure what else I can put in detail wise, guess looking for anyone's similar experience on this. I know that its near impossible to get through to revenue with long hold times.

Was in the Same Position as you , Phone your Local Tax Office , Provide both PPS Numbers , They Lady I spoke to was genuinely happy and said there was "Good News" , I created an account on revenue.ie and submitted P60's for 3 years and got back several cheques that came to over 5K

Wow TimHorton that's amazing I have a colleague at work that had slightly similar outcome too so definitely seems to be worth a call not matter how long you're on hold for :)

    your salary
    her salary
    how much tax you've paid
how much tax she has paid

basically you dont get any new tax credits or cut off point from being maried. instead you get to share your partners. so if one of you aren't fully utilising your tax credits and cut off point the other can get it as spouses.

quick rule if both of you earn more than 34k all allowances are being used so no refunds. if one of you earn more and the other less there will be some sort of refund.
