Anybody know what the procedure for boarding LUAS, Bus and DART with under 5s since they are meant to be free on these services. Do they need some form of a ticket?

For example, on a bus do I need to get a ticket from the driver for them or just walk on with them and and scan the leap for myself only?

No ticket needed, but equally they are not to occupy seats if needed by others

It may have been always free on the bus for under 5s, but on the CIE trains it was under 3 in the 1960s.
14 was the age when child rail passengers became adults.

It was probably the 1970s when rail was brought into line with buses, ie 5 & 16.

Nope!! Up until a few years ago it was under 3's then it changed to under 4's and finally last year it changed to under 5's.
I'm talking about Dublin Bus by the way I have no clue about any other company.

It only got raised to under 5 this january. Beforehand it was under 4. Which was a stroke of luck for me, as my son was just about to turn 4.

Waiting for the gp visit card to be raised before he turns 6 now :)

Is that a bylaw or just polite? I've never heard of it before.

    14. Children
14.1 Except as may be specified in the publications and notices of and applicable
to Iarnród Éireann, children under five years of age may travel free of charge
when accompanied by an adult passenger holding a valid ticket for the journey
provided such children do not occupy seats that are required for fare paying passengers

Law - but impossible to achieve, found that out on a lacked LUAS this morning!! Kayden wanted to "stand on the seat to see the cows".

    Yes, on the Red Line!!!

"Under 19s can travel for free with a Child Leap Card from 2nd - 15th July. Find out the details here
Dublin Bus (excluding Airlink), Luas, DART services, commuter rail services in Dublin's "Short Hop Zone" and Bus Éireann services where Leap Card Validators are available."

Good initative but you have to have to register for a Childerns Leap card which will probably mean low uptake.

The purpose of the promotion is to get kids into using Leap services. 2 weeks at the start of summer means, they have a card they might use during the rest of the summer.

It's fairly likely schoolkids would have'em already.

Can the child (once old enough of course), use the kids LEAP card by themselves ?

Great idea for summer surely - kids get to to go out an about and learn a skill of using a tap on/tap off card.

    Win/win ??

I think it was meant that if your toddler gets on the bus free, they must stand when a paying passenger gets on.

Never happens! It did when I was a wain as the mother would make me get up!!!!

maybe sit on a mother's lap but young children standing on a bus is an accident waiting to happen

Absolutely. Then when term starts next September they have their leap card to avail of cheaper fares to and from school.
