Adding a second BEV or PHEV?

Currently have a 2015 Zoe, smaller battery used for commuting into and out of Dublin (100km a day) plus local runs. Love it, it's always the go to car for us now unless the run is long. Have a 7kw home charger and 22kw charging at both work places. Rarely use public charging (maybe once every month or two, usually destination SCP).

Looking to add a second car to replace the Peugeot 3008. It's real MPG is 52, need to better this if possible. Car need to have a boot big enough for 4 spaniels and preferably have a dog guard/tail guard system or dog box available (this is my sticking point). Will be doing same run as Zoe, probably less in commute (more like 55km) but starting in Wicklow mountains so a fair bit of up and down although this doesn't seem to affect the zoes range at all as the hills are cancelled out by coasting down the otherside. Need to comfortably be able to go to Ballymena (254km) once every two weeks (not up and down on same day, plenty of charging available).

Currently looking at Mitsubishi Outlander, BMW i3 Rex, Prius (Phev or not?) and the Ioniq. Open to all other suggestions.

If you're looking for boot space for 4 dogs I'd rule out all but the Outlander tbh.

I had a bmw i3 rex for a week and it wouldn't suit you. Think you need an outlander as stated above. Good machines by all accounts but if you research what's in the pipeline from manufacturers there could be some tasty electric and plug in hybrids coming down the line pretty soon if you could hang on for a year or so.

To be honest even without the long trip 240km requirement you're not going to get an EV with a large boot for 4 dogs (unless of course you fold the seats down in the Ioniq).
Unless you're looking at a model X, you're limited to the likes of the Outlander for now. In the near future we'll have the Ipace and the Etron but both of these are likely to be at or around the model X pricing.

It's the outlander. The others won't suit. I would have suggested a 30kWh ENV200, but you would need a fast charger for a stop along bi-weekly journey.

I get the four in the Zoe currently, when necessary! :D

It does sound like the Outlander is the answer, thanks

So, went and drove the Outlander PEV, Niro PHEV and a Kadjar and Karoq. Niro is winning by miles - anyone own one? Still happy with it?

If you like the Niro, you really should consider waiting until next year when the Niro EV comes out. Even with the low range changer option you should easily make it to Ballymena on a charge. With the longer range one you would almost make it to there and back...

We did chat about that with the dealer - unfortunately not willing to rely on public charging as it stands so ruled it out. We would be likely to replace the Zoe with one or possibly a Kona in the future

Colleague just bought a Niro PHEV. Seems like a nice car, only drove it around a business park and it felt solid. The battery is inside the boot so the boot is quite shallow. Inside including the leather seemed good quality. Outside paint quality was very so so, major orange peel throughout.

Spacewise it's very similar to a LEAF but with considerably smaller boot.
