M50

    Hi

Something I have been meaning to ask for a long while now:

I was away for many years in the late 80's and all of the 90's. During that time, the M50 was built. But I have often wondered why there is no J8 on the M50. Is there anyone out there to satisfy my curiousity?

    Thanks!

There was going to be an M47 to replace the N7 and link into an outer Leinster loop called the M45. http://www.irishmotorwayinfo.com/inex/roads/futures/m47.html

It's probably unlikely to ever happen now.

That page is a wish list. The M47 number was never dreamed of, it would have been a continuation of the M7 from the current end at Naas all the way to the mythical J8 on the M50.

The Ryder Cup came to town, so they grade separated the Naas Road instead of building the new M7, so it wasn't needed after. Its a pity really, would have been nice. Why the Ryder Cup plans didn't do Newlands, which left us with that absolutely ludicrous bottleneck for years, I'll never know!

What I don't know is how far the plans got. Did they do route selection?

The M7 extension to the M50 if built would have been the M7.

There was a rough land reservation for it including for the junction, route selection in the modern concept didn't exist quite the same way but the route was selected

I think you can also see the land reserved for a better N3 junction north of the Westlink, including specific space for loops, from satellite imagery still.

Bottleneck is just pushed further up the road to the merge of the J9 M50 exit and the Naas Road now. Whoever designed that mess should be ashamed of themselves, ditto for whoever approved it in the NRA/SDCC. Had the opportunity to re-design the whole junction and that's what they came up with.
