I remember years ago it was "better" to buy Business Broadband off the likes of Eir as you'd get no contention, is that still the case?

In situations where there's a line but no cable or fiber available, is there any reason to go with a Business package over a Residential one? Maybe even better customer support when things inevitability go wrong.

Consumer (Home) and SME are treated the exact same. You need to have a large account (say 30+ lines) to get any different treatment.

You can pay for a higher SLA but the broadband itself is identical.

Not 100% accurate on Virgin Media... Im on Business SME package, and yes, the price is more, but i do get a slight speed bump (400/40 VS 360/36), more IPs (5 usuable VS 1) and a few other options: you can convert your phone lines to VoIP, you can run servers all you want, you get dedicated support who know what they are talking about, no bandwidth limits (mind you same on standard Virgin) and you can put their modem into proper modem only mode (so, use your own router). yes, its a bit more than standard "home" broadband, but it is worth it, IMHO...

With Vodafone business, you get truly unlimited data usage and a fixed IP.
