Looking at a placement for first year in a school in Rathmines
    But living in Sandymount
Just a bit worried about the commute
Does anyone have experience of how practical it is to use the bus from Sandymount to Rathmines every morning?

I imagine car across the various main roads would be pretty bad, and wouldnt be an option every day anyway
I know the 18 bus does do this route, anyone have any thoughts on doing it that way?

sorry if this is in wrong thread

18 could possibly take a bit long but would be fine. Would be a very handy cycle though. Wouldn't recommend driving if you would be going at rush hour.

You could probably cycle it in less than 15 minutes.

Wouldnt be mad keen on letting a 13/14 year old cycle across the Merrion rd and the N11, through Ranelagh or whatever to be honest
Think bus is main question really

I think the OP is training to be a teacher and in first year college not a first year secondary school student.

The 18 gets stuck at Rathmines eastbound in the morning and westbound in the evening, but that shouldn't affect you. Otherwise it is fine. Sandymount-Rathmines is about 20 minutes.

Put your exact locations and relevant dates and times into www.a-b.ie and tweak the settings. Make sure you have selected "take neighbouring stops into account for origin and destination maximum X min walk".

As a regular user of the 18... Walk. Its quicker and more reliable.

The 18 has to be one of the worst bus services in Dublin. They vanish from the RTI and can take half an hour to go less than a mile between Rathmines and Ranelagh.

A journey might take 15 mins one day and 40 mins the next so leave early! You are going against the peak traffic flow so it might not be to bad however.

In the case of the 18 at Ranelagh and Rathmines, this is often because the bus is unduly delayed at traffic lights.

At least if they get as far as Ranelagh / Rathmines and the bus is stuck going nowhere fast, they could get off and walk the rest in about 5 - 10 minutes.

I agree cycling would be best. Reasonably flat route no hills. It'd be faster than a car too.
