Customs on replacement item

Hi, quick question that someone might be able to answer.

I bought an item on eBay from the US that arrived last week. I had a small customs bill of €60 to pay upon collecting it from the Post Office, which I paid.

When I opened the box, the item was damaged. The seller has agreed to send me a replacement, and does not want the damaged item returned.

I don't know if the seller has put anything on the packaging indicating that it is a replacement, or anything indicating the value of the item. But if I do get landed with another customs bill, is there anything I can do to avoid the second customs fee or am I stuck with it?

    Thanks

I’d say ring Customs. I think that if it is stated as a replacement for a damaged item it would be ok. They should probably show the original shipping date, and show zero for cost and shipping, but again, customs are the best ones to ask

Here is a email response I got from customs explaining a very similar quarry of a replacement phone from the USA

""Thanks for your email.  If customs charges were paid on the original purchase  - no customs charges due on replacement.  You may be requested to forward the receipts showing payment.  Please contact me on <SNIP> for further clarification if required"""

    MOD: Phone number removed.
