Hi guys , I've been offered a job with a pay at scale 1 . At the moment I'm on scale 6 at the same job ,so I replied to say could the new employer match this, so the new employer replied to say yes they could and I went to their office and completed forms etc. That was 2 weeks ago,and today they sent an email to say there was an administrative error and the pay is at scale 1. Any views or opinions please.

Have you handed in your notice in your current job yet?

    Yes

What did the paperwork you signed say? There could just be an error that someone wasn’t told what scale you’re meant to be on. Have you contacted the company back?

Could very well be that your new manager and payroll need to have a phone-call to get this ironed out.
Your current employer is presumably organising your replacement while this dithering takes place?

Paperwork was for vetting, medical history and references.

I've seen this strategy before. You'd almost want to sign the pay agreement before you hand in notice, as they've you partly cornered now.

Why does any one hand in their notice before a contract is signed, sealed and delivered? Why risk it?

Have you pointed out you only accepted the job based on the scale being at 6 and won't accept it at scale point 1.

Most employers will accept a retraction of notice, how long has it been sonce you handed it in.. Unlikely they have done much towards filling it.

Yeah, if you only accepted the job based on their promise then you shouldn't let them wriggle out of it.

I had to do it with my current job. The vetting process was complete, but the HR Director was on holidays and was the only person who could sign on their side and my other employer knew I was going because I had to get two separate references from them. Nervewrecking experience!!
