Can anyone explain to me how Viber works?

I recently installed Viber on my smartphone.

Just wondering, how does it all work?

More specifically can you make free calls with it installed? (or are there any 'catches'?)

I was browsing the app after it installed, and it mentioned something about ' 'buy credit'?? I thought the app was supposed to be 'free' :P (or am I mistaken?)

How exactly do I go about making a free call on Viber?

    Thanks all. :)

As long as you have WiFi/data,and the other person is on Viber calls are free, messenger is better

Free calls or messages to anyone else who uses Viber. You can also make calls to non-Viber numbers, but you need to buy credit for thise

Yes. You make free calls & send free messages to other people using Viber. If you are trying to dial a normal number (somebody not using Viber), you need credit for this.

The general idea is that if your using an app that uses the internet to carry the call then that should be free, like skype. Both caller and receiver need an active internet connection for this to work, obviously. Since one does actually pay for ones internet connection it can't be though that the call is truly free but just something you can do without extra charge as part of you internet package.

However if one is using an app to call a regular telephone number i.e. a landline number or a mobile number, then that functionality can't be provided for free because the process uses not just the internet but phone networks, a kind of a mix of the 2, which is why one may need to buy credit for use in that kind of scenario. Usually this kind of call is not as good quality as a regular landline to landline call but on the plus side it's usually a lot cheaper.
