CAO Offers

Hi there, I sat my LC this year and I got my HPAT results a few days ago which leaves me in a very decent position to study medicine this coming year. Sorry if this isn't the right forum to post this by the way.

    1) I've noticed that most years, the points for medicine go down significantly in the second round of offers. Is it possible to accept an offer in the first round and then cancel that offer and accept a better one (higher up in terms of preference on my application) if it becomes available in the second round? Or are you tied down to an offer once you accept it?

    2) Why is it that the points drop so much in the second round? Like take Trinity for example. It started off at 742 and then went all the way down to 731. And is this the lowest points total in the second round or the lowest points total overall? I'm not sure if there's such thing as a 3rd round so that's why I'm pretty confused.

Thanks a lot for any help in advance.

FIrst off, congrats on your HPAT results!

I am nearly certain you can accept an offer that is higher points if it falls into your points range when second/third round offers are being made. I read a girls post on theleavingcert.com (think it was from around 2009) before on the matter - I am pretty certain that she accepted UCD for her first round offer but then got Trinity cos the points went down when the second round offers were made. Of course you don’t have to accept them though, she just really wanted Trinity. Trinners are winners... 😅 you aren’t tied down to an offer if you accept it, I have a friend who accepted a mathsy course in NUIG last year but transfered to BioMed. I’d say it is influenced by the numbers tho.

Second round offer points drop for a number of reasons - people taking graduate entry Med, going abroad, taking different courses, taking med at a different college. All in all, I think it’s to do with a lack of numbers. That’s not to say that a lot of people don’t apply for med, just that they want the very best of those people in their classes. Remember, 731 is still an amazing result! Third round offers are real, dunno how often they are handed out though.

Best of luck in August :)

Yes. If you accept an offer in round 1, you can accept a higher offer in subsequent rounds. If it's with a different college to the first round, and you've already paid fees, these will be refunded or transferred to the new college.

    Congratulations on your HPAT results!
