Might be useful for anyone in the market for a hard drive. I picked up a refurb 1TB WD elements portable HD for €27.90.

    https://www.wdc.com/en-ie/products/wd-recertified.html

Ordered June 18th and got delivered today and everything working fine. Same piece of kit is £47 on amazon.

WD 1TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0, for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 - Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06VVS7S94/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_XBNmBbN967FNZ

I also have a 20% code they emailed me if anyone needs it PM me.

    Any chance of that code?

Code gone to first PM although I don’t think you can use it with the refurbs now that I read the T+Cs.

I got the AV-TV one a while back.. for recording with me telly.
    Works like a dream.

Other drives were too slow etc.. but this is hassle free for the job.

Thanks OP, didn't really need it but got a 750GB portable for €24.99 delivered. It's always handy to have. I also signed up to be notified when some of their cloud drives come back into stock. If that works and they are the same price, that'll be fantastic.

    Hi,
I've been watching one of these NAS for months and never available. I have bought reconditioned items from WD before without issue but I've logged over 20 emails and no success yet.........

A lot of stock is unavailable at the moment, you need to hunt around and see if things are in stock by changing the capacities and colour options.

Most of the products are out of stock at any given moment. They come in sporadically (no set time of day) and in limited quantities. The smaller drives seem to come into stock more often than the larger ones. A few of the things there, I have never seen in stock, ever.

The stock notification function doesn't really work in my experience. You have to manually keep an eye out.

Note that the warranty is much shorter (6 months vs 2/3 years).

35 quid for a 1TB blue coloured external. Nice one. I'll test it out a bit, I think I'll use it as a secondary backup drive.

I've got a few of these years ago and use them on my Xbox and PS4, faultless.
    Great value

Hey I don’t know much about these but I need an external hard drive for the Philips 49pus smart tv that was posted here a few months ago as I am out of internal memory for apps. I don’t need much space and the tv just specifys a minimum of 64 gb.
Could someone point me in the right direction?

I'd say a large USB stick would suit you better... you can get a good brand 128GB for 30 quid or so. (Sandisk).

Same here. Bought a 1TB laptop size drive (2.5" external) and a 3TB desktop, 3.5" external. Shucked the big one for my PC as a secondary drive - died after 4 months of almost no use. Warranty was 3 months at the time so SOL.

Really these drives are only good for storing non-important stuff. Do not rely on a possibly returned item.

I go one of the WD AV-TV drives.. 1TB .. it works brilliantly with the TV.
    Makes recording and pausing possible.
And I just just the rest of the space for movies...

    twas only 50 yoyos roughly...

I just don't see the value in buying a refurb, they're only marginally cheaper than a new drive with full warranty. I'd even argue you could find them for the same price or cheaper when on sale on Amazon at the likes regularly enough. Keep an eye out on prime day on the 16th.

Not really. For example, the cheapest the €27.90 hard drive from the OP has ever been on Amazon is £39 (~€45), so it's still ~40% cheaper than its cheapest ever price. So if you're just using it to store media etc., then it's totally worth it.

Maybe not that exact model of drive, but plenty of 1TB drives have been in around that price. Even using them to store unimportant data like media, they still only come with a 6 month limited warranty. I'd rather pay the extra few quid to get a brand new drive and full warranty. A dozen people on here and HUKD where the deal was originally posted reported drive failures with many falling just outside of the warranty period.

Cheers for the heads-up. I think I'll tress test mine for a while before using it for anything. If it does fail I think I'll look to an external SSD for storage.

You'll get drive failures for brand new hard drives in the same time period too. And of course there will be comments on forums from those few who have had it failed, you get them on any hard drive deal new or otherwise, you won't get comments from those whose hard drives are still working fine and dandy. Unless you can source a study done showing that re-certified hard drives are significantly more susceptible to failure, than it's merely an opinion you are giving. :)

I don't think the warranty on new product actually covers the value ( real or to you) of lost data any ways so its of limited use ?

You will, but they'll come with a full warranty and be replaced under it accordingly.

...and of course recertified hard drives will be more susceptible to failure over a brand new drive, they've been used and returned/repaired. You might very well get a good drive that had little/no use or you could get one that was used heavily. You dont know. The few euro extra is worth the peace of mind alone.

That logic applies to any used product. I assume you're against people buying laptops on Adverts?

This is not like buying used from adverts. These are sold as re-certified by the manufacturer, which would lead me to believe all should be good with them. Previous users experience on here doesn't line up with that in reality.

With WD refurb my mindset is this:
-What is the saving over a new drive?
-Does the saving make up for the shorter warranty ?

In some cases it's definitely worth it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of those 1TB portables for €25-30. If it fails, whatever.

I would be more hesitant with expensive drives or those NAS units. If you're only saving 30% but your warranty is 4x or even 6x shorter, that's not great value imo. But again, you have to weigh it up on a case-by-case basis.

Got my 1TB portable on Thurs. Nice colour blue, and I'm just doing some testing on it now before I start to copy my stuff across. Hopefully it'll be grand.

What kind of testing should be done? I have always just transferred my files over.

    https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/

Run it, and it'll tell you the health of the disk.

Personally, I'd run file recovery software on these disks. Usually only find default Windows profiles, though.

Ah I'm just creating some massive files (30GB) on the disk a few times just to make sure it all goes okay. Using the unix command dd to do so. It's just because a few on here reported quick failure with little use. If I stress it a little bit now, I should find any problems before the warranty runs out.

It was 30 something quid, no huge loss if anything does happen at the same time.
