Broadband (wifi) query

Our contract with Virgin media is coming to an end in the next 2 weeks, their broadband has been very good the last year however the new customer offer is running out and we will be paying double for their broadband, tv and home phone deal and I am loathe to pay this.

I have sought a deal with them to pay closer to this years rates but they are not playing ball so I am genuinely considering changing to Eir on their 45euro per month offer.

They only offer 100mbs whereas we consistently get 180mbs with Virgin media (on their package where they offer up to 240mbs).

My question is, what is the Eir broadband like? Is it reliable? The young lad loves his online gaming, downloading from PS4 store etc....

Based in the westmeath region, they have assured me we can avail of eir fibre in this area but obviously id like to be sure of what the speed will be like before committing to purchase

Any advice would be really appreciated

Do you watch much TV? Moving from Virgin to EirVision will be a large downgrade.

100Mb is the current maximum, depending on location it may be as low as 7Mb (You can only get their TV at 24Mb and up).

We would watch a bit of TV yeah, but our main worry would be the broadband. Having just spoken to them they have told us we can receive the full 100mbs at our address.

Its a downgrade i'm sure yes, but its the difference between 45euro per month and 70euro per month. And Eir also offer the BT sports package which is a sweetner.

Be careful of believing what they tell you. Is there a cabinet at the front of your estate? How far are you from it. After 400m you can expect to loose 10 mb for every 100m so if your 700m away you can expect to get 70-60mb depending on line. At 1200m you can expect 15 to 10mb 1.3km 10-7mb

Most homes will see no change between 180 and 100M.

Also, if you consider the Eir offering, there are loads of other providers you can choose from.

Judging from the fact, that you can get up to 100 Mbit/s, you're within VDSL/FTTC coverage.

Any provider listed with a square green logo here: https://fibrerollout.ie/rollout-map/where-to-buy/ can service you via the copper line, that OpenEIR provides.

Lots more choice than just Eir retail.
