Easy as plug-and-play* (depending on your laptop model!)

Only tricky thing is that you will have to clone your OS to the new drive, unless you have room to install this as a slave.

A search of your laptop model + disassemble should show you.

*edit: not that easy if you want to replace your hard drive!

Works out at €103.68. Almost €50 cheaper than on the Crucial website.

I have 180gb SSD and 1TB HDD. How tricky is it to swap out the SSD for this one?

    Desktop or laptop?

I'm assuming the HDD is for storage only and doesn't have the OS on it.

I'd use clonezilla to copy the 180GB SSD to this one.

It’s a laptop. Yeah, the OS and main applications are on the SSD. Thanks.

Pardon my ignorance but could this be used in a M.2 Type 2280 slot?

    No. It's Sata drive.

    This one will do: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-MX500-CT500MX500SSD4-Internal-2280SS/dp/B077SQ8J1V/ref=sr_1_5?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1530026800&sr=1-5&keywords=crucial+500gb

Is it such a great deal?!

BX are budget line, and faster and bigger MX500 500GB is 89.99... I'd rather go for that one (if I needed more SSDs :D)

Usually dispatched within 1 to 4 months.

Could be waiting a while :o

    That's misleading.Some m.2 2280 drives are sata.But this drive is a different form factor.

For those who love being pedantic.

MX500 is TLC, BX is MLC.

The performance seemed very similar. Main difference was it didn't support hardware encryption. Though you could do it in software.

Performance might be but longevity / performance over time is better with MLC (at least it was last time I read up on the subject several years ago now :) )

It's fine. There is nothing mechanical inside.

But for this reasons you should never buy HDD from azon.

I bought one before and it came bubble wrapped inside a box so ymmv.

why are they so expensive anyway, they are so light, it feels like they could be made for about a tenner a pop. Maybe someone here could enlighten me

You're paying for the memory chips inside it and the controller. These all have very little weight. They are that size because SATA drives have standard sizes. This is a 2.5" drive which will fit a lot of laptops. Manufacturers also make smaller M.2 drives which newer systems accept.

You should consider changing banks. Your bank has charged you a terrible rate and / or foreign exchange commission.

The deal was £79.99, this translates to £81.99 with the higher Irish VAT

    I paid €93.01 with Revolut (€1 = £0.8815, no commission)

I have used AOMEI Backupper software free version and cloned my existing disk, took more than 4 hours for clone of 360gb hard drive with OS and everything in it....

If I were you, I'd take a copy of your docs/pics/music etc and copy them to an external hard drive or USB stick. Then install your SSD and reinstall your OS and applications. It's always a good idea to do a clean install in situations like this. You get to start from a clean slate and install the essentials. You can then copy your files back from your external disc or USB.

You always have your old unchanged hard drive which you removed that you can return to if things go bad. You'll have your OS/files/Progs, everything sitting there.

    My 2c...

As Alan says, a clean install is always the best thing to do. But, just get an external HDD enclosure for a few quid on ebay, install your old HDD into this and all your old files will be there. Then, when you're sure you have everything you want from it, you can format it and use it as a backup for important stuff. Not enough computer users backup their important stuff away from their machine. Then they cry when the HDD crashes and takes all their important files with it. :)
