    Hi All

Hoping you can help me. I'm working on the Civil Service at the moment as a CO and am nearly at the top of my payscale so looking for a promotion. Not much going right at the moment, but am applying for a few jobs that are SO/EO level at the moment. My question is, will I stay at my same pay or will I have to start at the bottom (take a pay cut essentially). I know this doesn't always happen, but is there some directive/list as to where would? Specifically I'm talking about HSE/Tusla (as far as I know, it's the same pay) and the IPA. As far as I understand, all jobs on PublicJobs.ie are that you meet your salary (or nearest higher point). Am I right? The IPA wasn't advertised on PublicJobs.ie so that would make me wonder. Thanks in advance.

When you say “not much going on at moment”, what do you mean?

IPA is a small place to work (which has advantages and disadvantages) so if you don’t like it or it doesn’t suit you then you’re stuck.

Tusla is seen as a bit of a mess of an organization which might cause a lot of internal stress within the organization.

SO grade no longer exists in Civil Service.

There’s a new EO exam coming up in the CS very soon so that might be an opportunity for you.

The amount and variety of jobs and roles in the CS is huge. If you’re not happy why not look to move within Dept? If not happy in Dept why not look to move Depts? Why not use the CS to upskill? See can you do a degree or some other third level qualification that they will pay for through the Refund of Fees?

I mean not too many promotional activities going on. I went for the the last 3 EO/HEO competitions and was in the first batch in all of them to interview, so while they're still going on, it's a long time since I've have those chances of promotion.
Yes, I know what you mean, thanks. Am working, and have worked in large Departments, so a smaller organisation may be nice.
I have heard mixed reviews from people working in Tusla, but of course, there are the media reports - am having an interview on Monday for them, so I'll see how that goes.
Yes, I'm aware of that - some of the positions are at a similar payscale to the old SO scale, and not as high as EO, so that's why I mentioned that for comparison.
Thank you, I had heard that it was late this year/early next year. I will definitely be applying but I have a few opportunities at the moment to work outside the Civil Service.
It's not that I'm not happy where I am, I just need a promotion - for lots of different reasons. I have moved Depts recently on an EOI to widen my experience - it has taught me loads and I'm so glad I did it. Have undertaken a number of courses in relation to where I work and any gaps I may have, and am currently waiting on exam results from an accredited course I did recently.
Thanks for the reply. Do you have any advice when it comes to the payscales?
