Virgin Media Hub 3.0 won’t work in Modem Mode

Moved house recently and got the new Virgin Media 3.0 Hub. I have my own Ubiquity network gear: router is Edge Router Lite and I have a Netgear 24 port switch and 5 Unifi AC Pro wireless access points.

With the Hub in router mode I can get internet access on wired and wireless devices connected to my Ubiquity network no problem. However, port forwarding does not work and even after setting IP address of the Edge Router Lite as the DMZ on the Hub, and I need that setup for a number of reasons.

I changed the Hub into Modem Mode and purple light comes on but even after power cycling everything, no devices on the Ubiquity network get an internet connection. Edge Router Lite admin page indicates it is connected with to internet but something’s clearly not right.

Virgin say they do not support Modem Mode so can offer no help and I have not found answers online. I’m not sure if the Hub is successfully going into modem mode or if it is and there is something I need to change on the Ubiquity side. As Virgin don’t support it, wanted to see if anyone here has knowledge that couls help troubleshoot it. Is there a particular sequence of steps I need to follow to make modem mode work properly?

Alternatively, is it actually possible to get port forwarding to work properly while the Hub is in router mode and can it work with Dynamic DNS? If it can, maybe I can get away without using modem mode.

I think you have to have an ipv4 address to use port forwarding and maybe even modem mode, sounds like they have assigned you an ipv6 addy?

Ah thanks, meant to say, yes they confirmed I was already on IPv4 and when I lookup my external IP address it does look to be IPv4.

May not be relevant but forgot to say I also have a Ubiquity Cloud Key running the controller software, repowered it and also did a software restart but no joy. Just moved into new house and had baby #3 arrive too so time to get this all sorted before herself comes home from hospital is very tight!

If you put it into modem mode and plug in a computer to one of the Ethernet ports, do you get a public IP address?

Ubi gear is normally the domain of networking nerds but you haven't posted what its leasing off the COMPAL if anything, how did you end up with this setup?

It wasn't, but then I read online some cases where it just didn't go into modem mode correctly on first try, so I redid it, disconnected coaxial cable, and then put it back into modem mode and then successfully got an external IP address and access to internet. So that indicates it's not on the Virgin side.

If I get time this evening after visiting hours at the hospital, I'll go through a full reset of the Edge Router Lite settings from scratch rather than carryover existing settings. I think the Cloud Key is managing the access points correctly, the issue is likely getting the Edge Router correctly connected to the Hub 3.0.

Ubiquity gear is more and more common these days. For me, new house we just built is long, so I planned in CAT6 cable runs to the ceiling in each room so that in the future when there may be 5/6G networks with very short range but huge bandwidth, we can put in the latest APs in each room and be sorted.

But for now, I want flawless wifi throughout the house and garden so have the Unifi APs and an outdoor AP I've yet to setup. I set the gear up in my old house to get familiar with it - was actually quite straightforward to do and worked flawlessly, highly recommend it. I run a lot of devices on the network and have home automation networks and CCTV network - ability to have separate networks and guest networks really helps manage things and ensure security.

Hopefully starting from scratch and factory reset of the Edge Router Lite settings now get the last hurdle sorted.

Thankfully this did the job, my Unifi network is now working well and port forwarding and Dynamic DNS setup on the Edge Router Lite are working well, nice to have full control of my network again!
