As a visitor (living about an hour away) I always found it pleasant, nice shops though touristy obviously. Good Supervalu, Aldi, Lidl, one secondary school, i primary school in town and 1 a bit out the Kilgarvan road. Always seems to have sports etc for kids if they're in your age profile. Great scenery, 2 beautiful peninsula's to choose from in Beara/Iveragh. Near enough to Killarney, slightly longer haul to Tralee I'd imagine.

Are you renting or buying? I'd imagine either is more expensive than might be expected for a country town.
