CORU

    Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone knew what it might be like to work in CORU? They are located in Smithfield, Dublin. I was offered a position by them but am a bit unsure as I remember hearing some bad stuff about them a while ago.

I know someone who used to work there a while ago but he hated it and in the end, he had to leave. I think I remember him saying that management were really horrible and I remember thinking that they sounded like bullies from what he was describing. I also remember him mentioning that HR were horrible and were in no way supportive to the staff. But I do remember him saying that he got on well with people at CO grade and said most of them were really sound.
So basically I'm wondering if anyone else has had experience of working there or might know what it's like now? If there have been any improvements or any changes in management staff over the last while?

Thanks very much in advance, I'd really appreciate any advice or heads-up about he place!

    Evie

Really depends on your line manager or team leader. There's good and bad management in any type of employment. Unfortunately you probably won't find out until you actually start. I was in a related area and was unfortunate.

I went for an IT specific HEO role there 2 years ago and didn't get it which was fine. However a year later , same role was advertised again so the person didn't stay long if that helps.

    Hi Evie,

Can't comment on the business in question. Are they on Glassdoor.ie? Any review there?
On the quoted section above - HR is not there to protect the staff, they're there to ensure staff get what they are entitled to, but their loyalty is always to the business.
    Good luck in your search.

Hi, thanks for your reply, no they're not on glassdoor.ie unfortunately, that's why I came here. I know what you're saying about HR but I've just heard some terrible things about that particular one. Like really they should comply with labour law and help to resolve workplace conflict but sure I suppose there are those that don't. Thanks for your input anyway

Thanks for your reply COYBIG, yea that makes sense actually, now that you say it, I've noticed a lot of jobs being advertised there over the last few months - seems like there could be a high turnover rate and with the economy improving abit and more jobs on the market, there might be more jumping ship.

Thanks for all your comments, I decided not to go with them in the end as I heard more negative things about the conditions and the culture of the organisation. And the culture would be a complete clash for me so I'm soo glad I didn't go with them in the end!

I hear what you're saying about there being good and bad in every office wizweb, but I suppose I'm referring to the wider culture of an organisation as that is something you will not change coming in from the outside. And I had heard that the culture was one where unfortunately the bullying and demeaning of staff was allowed to occur. And that working conditions were not great either and certainly not as good as those in other public sector bodies who are essentially doing the same job for the same money, if not slightly more money.

Thanks again for your input wizweb

You're welcome. I firmly believe that you have made the right decision. My former organisation as hinted has a direct connection to CORU. The culture was toxic though there were some 'good' managers. Rare though as it wasn't a trait encouraged by higher management or the organisation in general. As I didn't at the time have a personal direct connection to CORU I didn't want to instil my lived experience bias on you.

I've worked in several different areas of the Public Sector over the years. Again I agree that some were much more tolerable than others. After a break I returned after a few years to a 'better' position effectively doing the same job as previously with colleagues for over a third pay scale reduction compared to others (who I was training!). Even though I returned with a new very relevant masters degree! I had a bullying boss who happened to be related to a higher manager. Also the organisation was run by an assigned individual who encouraged infighting to divide and conquer. So upon reflection I must admit the culture there was/is toxic. I may have been naive for a time thinking I could in any way influence change. Impossible when the management shares the same union. Thankfully I realised in hindsight that the money was so bad combined with the drama and four hour daily commute (considering there was a department denied to me with similar vacancies only 20 mins walk away. With a direct transfer with a colleague refused!) I left. I'm sorry I ever took that position in hindsight so again I wholeheartedly agree with your choice.
